Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, develop, and implement engaging, standards-aligned French language curriculum and daily lesson plans for various proficiency levels, from introductory to AP or IB Higher Level.
  • Cultivate an immersive and interactive classroom atmosphere where French is the primary language of communication, encouraging active student participation and risk-taking.
  • Employ a wide range of differentiated instructional strategies, pedagogical approaches, and authentic materials to accommodate diverse student learning styles, needs, and abilities.
  • Develop and administer a variety of formative and summative assessments, including projects, oral presentations, and written examinations, to accurately evaluate student progress and language proficiency.
  • Integrate modern educational technology, language-learning apps, and digital media resources to enhance instruction and provide students with dynamic, 21st-century learning experiences.
  • Instruct students on the diverse histories, cultures, arts, and societies of the global Francophone world, fostering cross-cultural understanding and global competence.
  • Maintain a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment through effective and proactive classroom management techniques that encourage student accountability and collaboration.
  • Provide regular, constructive, and timely feedback on student work to guide their learning journey and promote continuous improvement in all language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
  • Prepare and guide advanced students for success in standardized examinations such as the AP French Language and Culture exam or the DELF/DALF certifications.
  • Foster a love for the French language by making learning relevant, contextual, and enjoyable, connecting classroom topics to students' interests and real-world applications.
  • Plan and lead co-curricular activities that extend learning beyond the classroom, such as a French Club, a chapter of the Société Honoraire de Français, or film nights.
  • Organize and chaperone educational field trips, cultural events, or international travel experiences to provide students with authentic exposure to the French language and culture.
  • Systematically track student attendance, grades, and performance data using the school's information system, ensuring records are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Conduct regular, proactive, and professional communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, classroom activities, and individual needs.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with colleagues within the World Languages department and across other disciplines to develop interdisciplinary projects and promote the school's language program.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, professional development workshops, and school-wide faculty meetings to contribute to the continuous improvement of the institution.
  • Serve as a student advisor, providing academic guidance and social-emotional support to a designated group of students.
  • Engage in the broader school community by attending student performances, sporting events, and other school functions.
  • Contribute to the admissions process by meeting with prospective families and participating in open house events to champion the French program.
  • Stay current with best practices in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and educational technology through ongoing professional reading and training.
  • Assist in the review and selection of new textbooks, software, and instructional materials for the French program.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Native or near-native (C1/C2) oral and written fluency in both French and English.
  • Deep knowledge of curriculum design frameworks (e.g., Understanding by Design, ACTFL World-Readiness Standards).
  • Expertise in language proficiency assessment, including creating rubrics and evaluating oral and written performance.
  • Proficiency in using Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Schoology, or Google Classroom.
  • Strong command of educational technology tools for language learning (e.g., Quizlet, Duolingo for Schools, Flip, Edpuzzle).
  • Comprehensive understanding of second language acquisition theories and their practical application in the classroom.
  • Experience preparing students for standardized language exams like the AP French Language & Culture or DELF/DALF.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid state teaching license/certification in French, or the ability to obtain one.

  • Master's Degree in French, Francophone Studies, Linguistics, or Education.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of successful French teaching experience at the middle or high school level.

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching advanced courses such as AP French Language and Culture or IB French B (SL/HL).
  • Significant experience living, studying, or working in a Francophone country or region.
  • Proven track record of improving student achievement and fostering a vibrant language program.
  • Experience in an independent, international, or language immersion school setting is highly valued.
