Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet all customers with a friendly and professional demeanor upon their arrival, offering assistance and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Safely and accurately dispense the correct type and amount of fuel (gasoline, diesel) into customer vehicles as requested, ensuring proper handling of nozzles and pumps.
  • Operate modern point-of-sale (POS) systems to efficiently process payments for fuel and store merchandise, accurately handling cash, credit/debit cards, and fleet payment cards.
  • Proactively maintain a clean, organized, and safe forecourt environment, which includes sweeping debris, cleaning up fuel spills immediately, and emptying trash receptacles.
  • Perform routine checks and cleaning of fuel pumps, nozzles, and hoses to ensure they are in optimal working condition and present a clean, professional appearance.
  • Monitor fuel levels in underground storage tanks using electronic gauging systems and report any low-level alerts or discrepancies to the station manager.
  • Provide basic complimentary vehicle services to customers, such as checking and topping up fluid levels (engine oil, windshield washer fluid) and checking tire pressure.
  • Actively promote and upsell convenience store items, car wash packages, and station loyalty programs to enhance sales and provide added value to customers.
  • Adhere strictly to all company, federal, and state safety regulations and procedures, including the proper handling of flammable liquids and knowledge of emergency shutdown protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of the entire forecourt area, identifying and promptly reporting potential hazards like leaks, damaged equipment, or slippery surfaces.
  • Manage and direct the flow of vehicle traffic on the forecourt to ensure a safe, orderly, and efficient environment for both vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Assist with managing inventory for forecourt supplies, such as paper towels, squeegees, and washer fluid, ensuring all islands are well-stocked.
  • Respond to customer inquiries regarding fuel types, station services, active promotions, and provide clear directions or assistance as needed.
  • Resolve customer complaints or service issues in a patient and professional manner, escalating more complex problems to a supervisor or manager when necessary.
  • Prepare and reconcile end-of-shift reports, including detailing sales totals, fuel volume dispensed, and documenting any notable incidents.
  • Operate and guide customers through the automated car wash system, performing basic cleaning and maintenance on the equipment to ensure functionality.
  • Remain vigilant for suspicious activities, such as potential fuel theft ("drive-offs") or vandalism, and report them immediately according to company policy.
  • Assist with receiving, unloading, and stocking merchandise deliveries for the associated convenience store during periods of low traffic on the forecourt.
  • Perform daily opening and closing procedures for the fuel station, ensuring all pumps and equipment are secured and all cash is balanced and accounted for.
  • Guide oversized vehicles, such as large trucks and RVs, safely to the appropriate fueling positions and provide specialized assistance as needed.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with light maintenance tasks around the station property, such as painting curbs, changing exterior light bulbs, or performing minor landscape upkeep.
  • Contribute to the cleanliness and organization of the convenience store interior, including sales floors, drink stations, and restrooms, as directed.
  • Participate actively in mandatory safety training sessions, team meetings, and customer service workshops.
  • Support the management team with periodic inventory counts for both forecourt supplies and in-store products.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating Point-of-Sale (POS) systems and electronic payment terminals.
  • Strong cash handling and mathematical skills for accurate transaction processing and change-making.
  • Knowledge of different fuel types (e.g., gasoline grades, diesel) and their proper dispensing procedures.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for checking vehicle fluid levels, tire pressure, and performing minor pump maintenance.
  • Understanding of and commitment to executing health and safety protocols related to handling flammable materials.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs while working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years.

Preferred: 6+ months of experience in a customer-facing role (e.g., retail, fast food, hospitality) is highly desirable. Previous experience as a gas station attendant or in a similar role is a strong plus.
