Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics and troubleshooting on complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic components of fuel dispensing systems, including pumps, meters, valves, and hoses.
  • Execute routine and preventative maintenance on fuel storage tanks, pipelines, filters, and related equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent downtime.
  • Install, repair, and replace key components of fuel systems, such as submersible turbine pumps (STPs), shear valves, flexible connectors, and overfill prevention devices.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of fueling facilities, meticulously documenting all findings and initiating corrective actions for identified deficiencies.
  • Calibrate fuel dispensing meters and automatic tank gauging (ATG) systems (e.g., Veeder-Root) to ensure precise measurement and inventory control in compliance with weights and measures standards.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls to diagnose and resolve urgent equipment failures, minimizing operational disruption for our clients.
  • Perform rigorous fuel quality control testing, including sampling for water, sediment, and microbial contamination, ensuring fuel meets all required ASTM and API specifications.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate digital records of all service activities, including maintenance, repairs, inspections, and parts usage, within our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ensure strict adherence to all federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations, including EPA, OSHA, and fire codes related to fuel handling and storage.
  • Manage and contain fuel spills or leaks according to established emergency response protocols, completing all necessary incident reports and notifications.
  • Interpret complex technical manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and electrical schematics to facilitate effective troubleshooting and repair procedures.
  • Conduct system integrity tests, including line and leak detector testing, to verify the tightness of the system and prevent environmental contamination.
  • Manage the inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies on a service vehicle, ensuring critical components are available for timely and efficient repairs.
  • Perform commissioning and startup procedures for newly installed or significantly repaired fueling systems, verifying all components function according to design specifications.
  • Interface professionally with regulatory agency inspectors during site audits, providing necessary documentation and demonstrating system compliance.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic software and electronic testing equipment to identify faults in modern fuel management systems, payment terminals, and network components.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict accordance with company safety policies, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning of underground and above-ground storage tanks, including the safe removal of water and sludge.
  • Address and repair issues with vapor recovery systems to ensure compliance with air quality regulations.
  • Provide clear and concise technical support to clients on the proper operation and daily checks of their fueling equipment.

Secondary Functions

  • Support service managers with ad-hoc reporting on equipment performance, common failure points, and parts usage.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal maintenance procedures, technical documentation, and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with operations and compliance teams to ensure fuel systems are configured to meet all business and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings, safety briefings, and planning sessions to coordinate daily and weekly work schedules effectively.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Petroleum Equipment Expertise: In-depth knowledge of fuel dispensing systems (e.g., Gilbarco, Wayne), submersible pumps, and automatic tank gauging systems (e.g., Veeder-Root).
  • Mechanical & Electrical Aptitude: Strong ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant EPA, OSHA, NFPA, and state-specific environmental and safety regulations for fuel systems.
  • Technical Documentation: Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical service manuals.
  • UST Certification: State-issued Class A/B Underground Storage Tank (UST) Operator certification is highly desirable.
  • Diagnostic Tools: Skilled in using multimeters, meggers, pressure gauges, and proprietary diagnostic software.
  • Computer Proficiency: Competence in using laptops, mobile devices, and CMMS software for record-keeping and communication.
  • Valid Driver's License: Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record; a CDL may be a plus.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in the service and maintenance of petroleum fueling equipment.

Preferred: 5+ years of experience as a fuel technician, including experience with a wide range of commercial and retail fueling systems. Experience working for a major petroleum equipment service provider is a significant asset.
