Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute all phases of the embalming process, including arterial, cavity, and hypodermic embalming, ensuring the highest standards of care, sanitation, and respect for the deceased.
- Skillfully utilize advanced restorative art and post-mortem cosmetology techniques to address trauma, discoloration, and tissue donation, ensuring the deceased is presented in a peaceful and natural-looking state for family viewing.
- Perform the dressing, casketing, and final cosmetic preparations of the deceased according to family wishes and established funeral home standards.
- Properly and safely handle the transfer of deceased individuals from the place of death to the funeral home, as well as to and from other facilities like crematories or cemeteries.
- Verify the identity of the deceased upon arrival and maintain a strict chain of custody and detailed case documentation from reception to final disposition.
- Aseptically aspirate and treat cavities with appropriate chemicals to ensure preservation and sanitation, following all health and safety protocols.
- Interpret case analysis, including the condition of the body and cause of death, to determine the appropriate embalming fluids, techniques, and preservation strategies.
- Maintain a detailed and accurate embalming case report for each individual, documenting procedures, chemicals used, and any special circumstances.
- Perform specialized embalming procedures for long-distance transportation, anatomical donation cases, or bodies with advanced decomposition or disease.
- Set facial features with precision and care to create a natural and restful expression, using sutures, adhesives, and other approved methods.
- Meticulously maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the preparation room and all related equipment, strictly adhering to OSHA, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
- Ensure all deceased are properly identified and tagged throughout the entire preparation and funeral process to prevent any errors.
- Adhere to universal precautions and bloodborne pathogen standards at all times, utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure personal and public safety.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with Funeral Directors regarding case status, specific family requests, and readiness for viewing.
- Respect and accommodate various religious and cultural customs related to the preparation and presentation of the deceased.
Secondary Functions
- Oversee and manage the inventory of all embalming fluids, restorative chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other mortuary supplies, placing orders as needed to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist with general funeral home duties as needed, including helping with services, conducting transfers, and performing light facility maintenance.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education to stay current with new techniques, regulations, and best practices in mortuary science.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of all hazardous materials and bio-waste in accordance with environmental and public health laws.
- Assist in training and mentoring apprentice embalmers, sharing knowledge and ensuring they adhere to the firm's quality and ethical standards.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- An Associate's Degree or accredited Diploma in Mortuary Science or Funeral Service Education from an ABFSE (American Board of Funeral Service Education) accredited program.
- Must hold a current and valid state Embalmer license or be able to reciprocate licensure.
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mortuary Science or a related field.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of licensed embalming experience, including the successful completion of a state-required apprenticeship.
