Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Greet and escort mourners, offering compassionate guidance and support upon their arrival at the funeral home and at off-site service locations.
- Assist Funeral Directors with all logistical aspects of visitations, funeral services, memorial services, and committal ceremonies.
- Prepare and arrange the chapel, visitation rooms, and other public areas for services, ensuring a clean, welcoming, and dignified environment.
- Manage the placement and arrangement of floral tributes, photographs, memorial boards, and other personal items according to family wishes.
- Conduct the transfer of deceased individuals from the place of death (e.g., hospital, residence, nursing home) to the funeral home with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
- Operate funeral vehicles, including hearses, limousines, and flower cars, with the utmost professionalism and adherence to traffic laws during processions and transports.
- Serve as a pallbearer or lead pallbearers during funeral services, providing clear, gentle instruction and support.
- Assist with the setup and operation of audio/visual equipment for memorial videos, background music, and the live streaming of services.
- Perform general maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of funeral home facilities, grounds, and vehicles to maintain a pristine and professional appearance at all times.
- Answer and direct incoming phone calls with a professional and empathetic demeanor, taking detailed messages and providing information as appropriate.
- Assist with the preparation and filing of necessary legal documents, such as death certificates, permits, and other authorizations, under the guidance of a licensed Director.
- Prepare caskets and urns for services, ensuring they are clean, properly positioned, and presented according to organizational standards.
- Assist with dressing, casketing, and cosmetizing the deceased under the direct supervision of a licensed Funeral Director or Embalmer.
- Maintain a comprehensive inventory of supplies, including memorial products, office materials, and facility maintenance items, and report reordering needs.
- Set up and manage reception areas for post-service gatherings, including coordinating with catering and ensuring the space is clean and organized.
- Handle and transport cremated remains with care and respect, assisting families during the final disposition process and completing related paperwork.
- Provide on-call support for after-hours removals and first calls, responding promptly and professionally to the needs of families and institutions.
- Distribute and collect memorial registers, prayer cards, and other service-related items to guests during visitations and funerals.
- Ensure all activities strictly comply with federal, state, and local regulations governing the funeral service industry (e.g., OSHA, FTC).
- Maintain a professional and composed appearance and demeanor at all times, representing the funeral home with the highest standards of integrity and compassion.
- Assist in the dignified transfer of the casket to and from the hearse, chapel, church, and graveside.
