Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive diagnostics on residential and light commercial heating systems to accurately identify malfunctions, system failures, and component issues.
- Execute timely and effective repairs on a wide variety of furnace equipment, including replacing motors, igniters, control boards, gas valves, and heat exchangers.
- Conduct thorough preventative maintenance services, including cleaning blowers and coils, checking electrical connections, testing safety controls, and measuring system performance to prevent future breakdowns.
- Install new heating systems and equipment, ensuring all work is performed according to manufacturer specifications, local codes, and company quality standards.
- Test and calibrate system controls, including thermostats and safety switches, to ensure proper and efficient operation.
- Use a variety of diagnostic tools, such as multimeters, combustion analyzers, and pressure gauges, to troubleshoot and evaluate system performance.
- Respond to emergency service calls in a timely and professional manner, often outside of normal business hours, to restore heat for customers.
- Educate homeowners and clients on the proper use of their heating systems, maintenance requirements, and options for system upgrades or enhancements.
- Perform meticulous brazing, soldering, and welding as needed to repair or install refrigerant lines and other system components.
- Read and interpret complex wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals to understand and service various models of equipment.
- Ensure all refrigerant handling and recovery is performed in strict compliance with EPA regulations and safety protocols.
- Provide detailed estimates for repairs and replacements, clearly explaining the scope of work and associated costs to the customer.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked service vehicle with an accurate inventory of parts, tools, and equipment.
- Complete all service tickets, work orders, and other required documentation accurately and submit them in a timely manner.
- Proactively identify and recommend opportunities for system upgrades, accessory sales (e.g., smart thermostats, humidifiers), and service agreements to customers.
- Adhere rigorously to all company and industry safety standards, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Collaborate with dispatchers, service managers, and fellow technicians to ensure efficient scheduling and effective resolution of customer issues.
- Participate in ongoing technical training and professional development to stay current with new technologies, equipment, and industry best practices.
- Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior technicians and apprentices as needed.
- Assist in the installation of other HVAC equipment, such as air conditioners and ventilation systems, as required.
