Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Meticulously prepare furniture surfaces for finishing, including stripping old finishes, sanding wood to a smooth and uniform state, and filling imperfections like dents, scratches, and cracks.
- Expertly apply a diverse range of finishing products, such as primers, stains, paints, glazes, toners, and topcoats like lacquer and polyurethane, using various application methods.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot professional spray equipment, including HVLP, air-assisted, and airless systems, ensuring optimal atomization and transfer efficiency for a flawless finish.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of color theory to precisely mix paints and stains, matching them to control samples, client specifications, or existing furniture pieces.
- Execute advanced and decorative finishing techniques, such as distressing, antiquing, cerusing, glazing, and creating high-gloss or hand-rubbed effects to produce custom, high-end looks.
- Read and interpret detailed work orders, technical drawings, and finishing schedules to understand project requirements, materials, and deadlines.
- Conduct rigorous in-process and final quality control inspections to identify and correct any finishing defects like runs, sags, orange peel, or contamination.
- Mask and tape off furniture sections with precision to protect surfaces not intended for finishing, ensuring clean, sharp lines and transitions.
- Manage the tinting and toning process to achieve consistent color and depth across multiple pieces or components of a single project.
- Sand between coats of finish (sealer and topcoat) to achieve superior build, clarity, and smoothness in the final product.
- Assemble and disassemble furniture components as required to ensure all surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas, are properly prepped and finished.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of different wood species and materials (e.g., MDF, veneers) and how they react to various stains and finishes.
- Carefully handle, move, and position heavy and delicate furniture pieces throughout the finishing process to prevent damage.
- Perform final detailing and touch-up work to ensure every piece is perfect before being released for delivery or client pickup.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including the regular cleaning of spray booths, mixing stations, and equipment to prevent contamination and hazards.
- Properly manage, store, and dispose of all chemical products, including paints, solvents, and thinners, in strict accordance with company safety and environmental policies.
- Collaborate effectively with designers, cabinet makers, and other production staff to coordinate workflow and ensure project specifications are met cohesively.
- Assist in maintaining accurate inventory of finishing supplies, notifying the supervisor when materials need to be reordered to prevent production delays.
- Contribute to process improvement by suggesting new techniques, tools, or materials that could enhance finish quality, efficiency, or safety.
- Keep detailed logs of formulas, processes, and time spent on projects for future reference, consistency, and accurate job costing.
