Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform butt fusion, electrofusion, and socket fusion welds on various diameters and wall thicknesses of HDPE and other thermoplastic pipes in accordance with industry standards (ASTM F2620, API, etc.).
  • Set up, operate, and maintain a range of fusion welding machines and associated equipment, including McElroy, Ritmo, and Connectra models.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, isometric drawings, pipeline alignment sheets, and project specifications to determine weld locations, pipe layouts, and material requirements.
  • Meticulously prepare pipe ends for fusion by facing, cleaning, and ensuring proper alignment to guarantee a high-quality, contamination-free weld.
  • Monitor and control critical fusion parameters, including temperature, pressure, and heating/cooling times, adjusting as needed based on pipe specifications and ambient conditions.
  • Utilize and interpret data logging devices to capture and record all parameters for each fusion joint, ensuring full traceability and compliance with project quality assurance protocols.
  • Conduct visual inspections of all completed welds to identify any potential defects, imperfections, or deviations from established standards.
  • Assist with hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing of completed pipeline sections to verify the integrity and leak-proof nature of the fusion joints.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform minor field repairs on fusion equipment to minimize downtime and maintain project schedules.
  • Adhere to all site-specific and company-wide safety policies, including participating in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), pre-task planning, and toolbox talks.
  • Operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts, telehandlers, or cranes for positioning and stringing large sections of pipe.
  • Document daily work progress, including the number of welds completed, materials used, and any challenges encountered, for reporting to the site foreman.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are properly stored and secured.
  • Collaborate effectively with pipefitters, equipment operators, and other crew members to ensure seamless workflow and efficient project execution.
  • Perform precise cuts, bevels, and preparations on pipe using saws, grinders, and other specialized tools.
  • Install and work with various pipeline components, including flanges, fittings, valves, and mechanical joints as required by the project scope.
  • Work efficiently in diverse and challenging field conditions, which may include trenches, confined spaces, elevated platforms, and exposure to various weather elements.
  • Guide and mentor apprentices or less experienced helpers, sharing knowledge of best practices in fusion welding and safety.
  • Verify all incoming pipe and fitting materials against project specifications to ensure the correct SDR, diameter, and material type are used.
  • Manage and track inventory of fusion consumables, such as cleaning wipes, data logging rolls, and other necessary supplies, reporting needs to supervisors.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's welding procedures and on-site safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with quality control inspectors and project engineers to address and resolve any technical issues or non-conformities related to welds.
  • Participate actively in daily toolbox talks, site-wide safety meetings, and project planning sessions to stay informed and contribute to a safe, productive worksite.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Manufacturer-specific or third-party certification in HDPE Butt Fusion and Electrofusion.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Diploma from a Welding Technology or Pipefitting vocational program.
  • Associate's Degree in a related technical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of hands-on, verifiable experience performing fusion welding on active construction or industrial projects.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience with a focus on large-diameter HDPE pipe (12" and above).
  • Current, valid certifications for Butt Fusion and Electrofusion from a recognized authority (e.g., McElroy University, PPI).
  • Proven experience in the oil & gas, municipal water/wastewater, mining, or power generation industries.
  • Experience working under rigorous QC/QA programs with extensive data logging and documentation requirements.
