Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the gallery's sales strategy, proactively engaging with new and existing clients to achieve and exceed sales targets.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, long-term relationships with a diverse clientele, including private collectors, curators, advisors, and institutional clients.
  • Oversee the entire exhibition lifecycle, from initial curatorial concept development and artist collaboration to budget management, installation, and de-installation logistics.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for gallery artists, managing communications, coordinating artwork consignments, and providing support for their career development.
  • Meticulously manage the gallery's art inventory, including cataloging new works, conducting condition reports, maintaining the gallery database (e.g., Artlogic, ArtBase), and overseeing artwork storage and handling.
  • Direct all aspects of gallery operations, ensuring the physical space is maintained to the highest standard, managing security protocols, and overseeing front-of-house presentation.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and communications plans for exhibitions and events, including writing press releases, managing social media channels, and creating email newsletters.
  • Manage gallery finances, including preparing and monitoring exhibition budgets, processing sales invoices, tracking payments, and contributing to overall P&L reporting.
  • Plan and coordinate the gallery's participation in international art fairs, including managing applications, booth design, shipping logistics, and on-site sales and staffing.
  • Lead, train, and mentor gallery staff, including assistants and interns, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment.
  • Represent the gallery at openings, art fairs, and other industry events to network, build brand presence, and generate sales leads.
  • Handle all aspects of art shipping and logistics, both domestic and international, including obtaining quotes, preparing documentation, and coordinating with fine art shippers.
  • Conduct in-depth research on artists, market trends, and potential exhibition opportunities to inform the gallery's strategic programming.
  • Manage the gallery's website content, ensuring artist bios, artwork details, and exhibition information are current and accurately presented.
  • Prepare and present sales reports, client activity analysis, and exhibition summaries to the Gallery Director or Owner.

Secondary Functions

  • Organize and manage logistics for special events, including artist talks, collector dinners, and private viewings to enhance client engagement.
  • Maintain and update the gallery's contact database (CRM) with detailed client notes, preferences, and acquisition history.
  • Oversee the production of exhibition catalogs, artist books, and other gallery publications in collaboration with designers and printers.
  • Respond to press inquiries and proactively seek media coverage to increase the gallery's and its artists' visibility.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with museum curators, critics, and other art world influencers to create opportunities for artists.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to identify new market opportunities.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by ensuring accurate sales and inventory data collection.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements, particularly for inventory and sales software.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team if applicable to gallery software development.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5+ years of experience in a gallery environment, including at least 2 years in a managerial or senior role. A demonstrable track record of significant art sales and established relationships with a network of collectors and curators is highly preferred.
