Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, prototype, and construct compelling and immersive game levels, taking them from initial white-box or grey-box stages all the way through to a final, polished, and shippable state.
  • Design and meticulously script intricate gameplay scenarios, including combat encounters, puzzle sequences, navigational challenges, and key narrative moments.
  • Take full ownership of large sections of the game world or a series of levels, ensuring a consistent and high-quality player experience from start to finish.
  • Engage in deep, cross-functional collaboration with artists, animators, and sound designers to ensure level environments are visually stunning, thematically coherent, and audibly rich.
  • Work hand-in-hand with systems designers to integrate and showcase core gameplay mechanics in interesting and innovative ways within the level layouts.
  • Utilize visual scripting tools (like Unreal Blueprints or Unity's Bolt) or light scripting languages to implement dynamic gameplay events, cinematic sequences, and complex AI encounters.
  • Champion the player's experience by designing intuitive layouts, clear signposting, and a balanced difficulty curve that feels challenging yet fair.
  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including level flowcharts, beat sheets, and layout maps to communicate design intent to the wider team.
  • Conduct regular playtesting sessions on your levels, gathering qualitative and quantitative feedback to identify friction points and areas for improvement.
  • Iterate relentlessly on level layouts, encounter pacing, and objective flow based on feedback from peers, leads, and formal playtesting.
  • Place and frame environmental storytelling elements and set pieces that enrich the game's narrative and deepen the player's immersion in the world.
  • Balance and tune gameplay elements within your levels, such as enemy placement, resource distribution, and reward structures, to create a satisfying gameplay loop.
  • Collaborate with the narrative team to ensure the level design supports and enhances the story's progression and emotional impact.
  • Troubleshoot and debug levels, identifying and resolving technical issues related to collision, streaming, scripting, and performance.
  • Propose and champion new, creative ideas for levels and gameplay moments that align with the project's overall vision and technical constraints.
  • Manage the level's performance budget by optimizing geometry, lighting, and object counts in collaboration with technical artists and engineers.
  • Design level layouts that accommodate a variety of player abilities, playstyles, and accessibility needs.
  • Implement and refine AI patrol paths, cover points, and encounter behaviors to create dynamic and believable combat scenarios.
  • Stay abreast of current design trends, industry best practices, and new technologies to continually push the quality and innovation of your work.
  • Present your work clearly and professionally during team reviews, articulating your design choices and the rationale behind them.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide constructive feedback to junior designers, helping to elevate the overall quality of the team's work.
  • Participate in studio-wide playtests for other areas of the game, providing fresh eyes and valuable feedback to other departments.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the level design pipeline and best-practice documentation for the entire design team.
  • Assist in creating content for marketing and promotional materials, such as capturing compelling gameplay footage or screenshots from your levels.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with at least one major game engine, such as Unreal Engine (including Blueprints) or Unity.
  • Strong understanding of 3D level editing and world-building tools (e.g., proprietary editors, Maya, Blender, 3ds Max for blockouts).
  • Competence in visual scripting to implement gameplay logic, events, and simple cinematics.
  • Solid grasp of architectural principles, spatial composition, and environmental storytelling.
  • Experience with version control systems like Perforce or Git.
  • Ability to create and interpret design documents, flowcharts, and top-down maps.
  • Understanding of game performance metrics and optimization techniques for levels.
  • Knowledge of fundamental game design principles, including pacing, flow, and difficulty balancing.
