Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Create exceptional, high-quality 3D models of characters, props, vehicles, and environmental assets, adhering to the game's established art direction.
- Sculpt detailed high-poly organic and hard-surface models in ZBrush or similar software, demonstrating a strong understanding of form, anatomy, and silhouette.
- Craft optimized, game-ready low-poly models with clean topology and efficient UV layouts, ensuring high performance without sacrificing visual quality.
- Develop and paint photorealistic and stylized textures for all assets using PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows in tools like Substance Painter.
- Collaborate directly with Concept Artists and the Art Director to translate 2D artwork into 3D assets while maintaining artistic intent and vision.
- Integrate, test, and troubleshoot 3D assets within the game engine (Unreal Engine/Unity), setting up materials, shaders, and ensuring they function correctly in-game.
- Work closely with Riggers and Animators to ensure character models feature proper topology and edge flow for seamless deformation and animation.
- Generate and bake high-quality normal, ambient occlusion, curvature, and other essential maps from high-poly sculpts to low-poly game models.
- Actively participate in art reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to continuously improve asset quality and uphold the project's visual bar.
- Manage and prioritize your tasks within the production schedule using tools like Jira, ensuring timely delivery of assets to unblock other departments.
- Optimize assets to meet strict performance budgets for memory and framerate, including the creation of multiple Levels of Detail (LODs).
- Research and gather a wide range of visual references to inform asset creation and ensure authenticity and believability.
- Author and tweak materials and shaders directly within the game engine to achieve specific visual effects and surface properties.
- Contribute to the evolution of the art creation pipeline by exploring, testing, and recommending new tools, software, and workflows.
- Build modular asset kits for environmental construction, enabling level designers to efficiently and creatively build out game worlds.
- Maintain impeccable file organization and adhere to established naming conventions to ensure a smooth and efficient production pipeline for the entire team.
- Troubleshoot technical and artistic issues as they arise, finding creative solutions to complex modeling and texturing challenges.
- Create both hard-surface models (weapons, architecture, vehicles) with a strong sense of industrial design and organic models (creatures, foliage) with anatomical precision.
- Ensure stylistic consistency across all created assets, aligning with the project's overall aesthetic and art bible.
- Mentor junior artists by sharing knowledge, providing guidance on best practices, and assisting with challenging tasks.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc asset requests from design, marketing, and cinematic teams.
- Contribute to the organization's art pipeline strategy and documentation.
- Collaborate with Level Designers and Gameplay Programmers to translate gameplay needs into functional and beautiful art assets.
