- Perform proper pruning of trees, shrubs and hedges for structure, health and aesthetic objectives—apply correct techniques for thinning, shaping, crown reduction and deadwood removal while following species-specific best practices and safety standards.
- Conduct soil assessments and corrective actions: collect soil samples, interpret basic lab results, apply amendments (lime, sulfur, compost, organic matter), recommend and apply appropriate fertilizers to optimize plant and turf growth.
- Establish new plantings and seasonal displays: prepare planting beds, amend soils, transplant specimens, set out annuals/perennials and follow planting plans to meet design intent and seasonal timelines.
- Manage turf care programs including aeration, dethatching, overseeding, fertilization, weed control and irrigation adjustments to deliver consistent, high-quality lawn performance in all seasons.
- Operate, maintain and perform routine servicing and safety checks on landscaping equipment (riding/stand-on mowers, walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws); ensure safe fueling, sharpening and basic repair to minimize downtime.
- Identify and safely remove hazardous trees, limbs and debris, coordinate with arborists for large removals, and apply proper rigging and chainsaw safety standards when authorized and trained.
- Implement and manage mulching programs: calculate material needs, select appropriate mulch types, install to correct depths and integrate weed control fabrics where specified to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
- Execute landscape installations including bed edging, hardscape cleanups, rock and bark installations, and basic drainage/erosion control measures to improve site function and appearance.
- Maintain accurate service logs, job notes and material inventories; prepare simple before/after photos and client reports and escalate issues to supervisors for complex plant health or design concerns.
- Manage seasonal tasks such as leaf collection, snow and ice removal, fall clean-ups and spring renewals with safe methods, proper equipment and attention to scheduling constraints.
- Provide on-site client communication: explain work performed, recommend seasonal care or enhancements, gather feedback and ensure expectations are met or corrected promptly.
- Follow and enforce health & safety policies including PPE use, chemical handling, lockout/tagout procedures for machinery, and safe lifting techniques to reduce workplace injuries and comply with regulatory standards.
- Implement water conservation and sustainable landscape practices such as rainwater harvesting, soil moisture monitoring, drought-tolerant plant selection and responsible fertilizer/pesticide use to support environmental goals.
- Assist with landscape renovation projects: remove invasive species, regrade beds, replant perennials and assist landscape designers/contractors during larger remodels to deliver cohesive outcomes.
- Train and mentor junior gardening staff and seasonal laborers on best practices for plant care, equipment operation, safety protocols and client service standards to grow an effective team.
- Coordinate and schedule subcontractors for specialized work (tree care, irrigation diagnostics, soil testing labs) and manage on-site access, safety and quality assurance for third-party vendors.
- Maintain an organized inventory of plants, soils, fertilizers, tools, and consumables; reorder supplies proactively and reconcile usage to budget or job estimates to control costs and maintain continuity of service.
- Monitor weather forecasts and adapt schedules and operations proactively (e.g., frost protection, heat stress mitigation, storm preparation) to protect plantings and minimize service interruptions.
- Apply herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in accordance with label instructions and local regulations; maintain certification or licensing where required, and keep accurate treatment records.
Secondary Functions
- Support seasonal promotional and installation efforts such as holiday displays, plant sales coordination, and community planting events.

- Provide temporary cover for related roles such as irrigation technician or groundskeeper during staff absences, ensuring continuity of core services.
- Assist with seasonal budgeting input by providing labor and material estimates for routine and special projects.
- Collect customer feedback and participate in continuous improvement efforts to refine schedules, products and service delivery.
- Respond to site emergencies such as fallen trees after storms, irrigation breaks or vandalism and perform immediate mitigation actions until more extensive repairs can be arranged.
- Support sustainability metrics collection by tracking water usage, mulch/compost volumes and pesticide application rates to help the organization meet environmental targets.
