Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough pre-entry atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring for oxygen, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), lower explosive limit (LEL) and other site-specific toxic gases using calibrated portable gas detectors, multi-gas monitors, photoionization detectors (PID) and sample pumps, and immediately communicate unsafe readings to site supervisors.
  • Perform bump tests, calibration, and routine maintenance on portable and fixed gas detection instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and company SOPs, documenting results and tagging equipment for service when out-of-tolerance.
  • Execute confined space entry gas testing procedures, confirm permit-to-work conditions, and verify that ventilation and isolation measures are effective prior to worker entry and throughout the work activity.
  • Interpret and apply site safety procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety data sheets (SDS), and permit conditions to ensure gas test results meet the required safe limits before allowing hot work, entry, or maintenance activities.
  • Operate and maintain gas sampling pumps, colorimetric tubes, detector tubes, and portable gas analyzers to obtain representative atmospheric samples from tanks, vessels, sewers, trenches and other enclosed spaces, ensuring accurate and legally defensible readings.
  • Respond to gas alarm events and emergency calls, perform rapid area re-testing, secure the area, and coordinate with supervisors, emergency response and rescue teams to implement control measures including evacuation and ventilation.
  • Maintain accurate, auditable records of all gas tests, calibrations, bump tests, instrument service history, and chain-of-custody for used sensors or calibration gases in compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Train, mentor and provide on-the-job coaching to new Gas Testers and site personnel on gas detection best practices, proper use of PPE, pre-entry checklists and permit-to-work systems to improve site safety performance.
  • Install, inspect and perform functional checks on temporary and permanent fixed gas detection systems and sensors, verify alarm set points and communication links to control rooms or alarm panels, and report faults for repair.
  • Conduct atmospheric monitoring for hot work operations (welding, cutting, grinding) and support issuance or cancellation of hot work permits based on continuous gas monitoring results and ventilation effectiveness.
  • Assist maintenance and instrument teams during troubleshooting of gas detection system faults, provide field measurements to diagnose sensor or transmitter issues and support corrective action plans.
  • Participate in safety meetings, pre-job briefs and permit walkthroughs to advise operational teams on atmospheric hazards, mitigation strategies and the interpretation of gas measurement data.
  • Collect and package gas sample media, coordinate chain-of-custody and deliver samples to laboratories when advanced analysis (e.g., VOC speciation, solvent screening) is required, ensuring compliance with sample preservation protocols.
  • Implement lockout-tagout (LOTO), isolation and blanking procedures in coordination with maintenance teams, and verify that mechanical and process isolations are gas-tight before allowing safe entry.
  • Inspect confined space entry equipment (harnesses, retrieval systems, lifelines, winches) and ensure rescue and retrieval plans are in place, participating in rescue drills as assigned.
  • Use handheld and fixed detector data logs to perform trend analysis and generate recommendations for sensor placement, alarm setpoint optimization and long-term monitoring strategies to management.
  • Maintain inventory of detectors, calibration gases, filters, spare sensors and PPE; order and stage replacement parts to ensure continuous operational readiness across shifts and sites.
  • Coordinate with contractors, third-party service providers and site leadership to ensure contractor personnel understand site-specific gas testing requirements, equipment use and reporting expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with local, regional and national regulations (OSHA, HSE, provincial standards, ATEX zones where applicable) and internal audit requirements related to gas detection, confined space and hot work activities.
  • Prepare detailed incident and daily activity reports that include test locations, environmental conditions, instrument readings, trending notes and corrective actions taken for distribution to HSE and operations leadership.
  • Perform site surveys to identify potential sources of hazardous atmospheres, recommend engineering or administrative controls (ventilation, purging, monitoring points) and support risk assessments or JSA/JHA processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support scheduled safety audits and instrumentation inspections; provide technical input on gas detection performance and corrective actions.
  • Assist in the development and revision of gas testing SOPs, permit templates, and training materials to reflect lessons learned and evolving regulations.
  • Participate in cross-functional incident investigations focused on atmospheric hazards to identify root causes and preventive measures.
  • Provide on-call coverage for night and weekend shifts when required and coordinate shift handovers with comprehensive status briefings.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to reduce false positives/alarms, improve response times and optimize sensor calibration scheduling.
