Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete and precise installation of a wide range of automated gate systems, including slide, swing, barrier, and vertical lift gates, following manufacturer specifications and engineering blueprints.
  • Perform comprehensive diagnostic assessments on malfunctioning gate systems to accurately identify issues, whether they are mechanical, electrical, or software-related.
  • Conduct intricate repairs on gate operators, control boards, and associated hardware, including the replacement of motors, gears, chains, and hydraulic components.
  • Skillfully weld and fabricate metal components for gate construction, modification, and repair, utilizing MIG, TIG, or stick welding techniques as required.
  • Install, wire, and configure a variety of access control devices such as keypads, card readers, proximity sensors, telephone entry systems, and vehicle loop detectors.
  • Perform preventative maintenance service on a scheduled basis, including lubrication, inspection, and testing of all system components to ensure long-term reliability and safety.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex low-voltage electrical wiring issues, ensuring all connections are secure, protected, and compliant with electrical codes.
  • Ensure all installations and service work strictly adhere to current safety standards, most notably UL 325, to protect end-users from potential harm.
  • Program and configure gate operator logic controllers and access control software to meet specific client operational requirements.
  • Respond to emergency service calls in a timely and efficient manner to restore gate functionality and property security for clients.
  • Read and meticulously interpret technical documents, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and site plans, to guide installation and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Manage the on-site installation process, which may include tasks like setting gate posts in concrete, core drilling, and trenching for conduit and wiring.
  • Interface with and educate clients on the proper operation of their gate system, explaining the work performed and providing user training.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a detailed and accurate record of all work performed, including parts used and time spent, by completing digital or paper work orders for each service call.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and equipment within the assigned service vehicle to ensure readiness for any job.
  • Uphold a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers, property managers, and contractors, serving as a positive representative of the company.
  • Operate a company service vehicle safely and responsibly, adhering to all traffic laws and maintaining the vehicle's cleanliness and maintenance schedule.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, sales staff, and other technicians to ensure projects are completed on schedule and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to apprentice technicians, sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for system upgrades or enhancements that could benefit the client and communicate these recommendations effectively.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Welding and Fabrication: Proficiency in MIG, Stick, and/or TIG welding for steel and aluminum repair and fabrication.
  • Low-Voltage Electrical Systems: Deep understanding of low-voltage theory, wiring, and troubleshooting, including proficiency with multimeters and other diagnostic tools.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to diagnose and repair mechanical systems, including gearboxes, chains, belts, and hydraulic/pneumatic components.
  • Access Control Technology: Knowledge of programming and installing various access control systems (e.g., LiftMaster, DoorKing, Viking Access, HySecurity).
  • Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and installation manuals.
  • Safety Standard Compliance: Working knowledge of industry safety codes and standards, particularly UL 325 for automated gate operators.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a technical/vocational school.
  • Manufacturer-specific training certifications (e.g., IDEA, LiftMaster, DoorKing).

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of direct experience as a Gate Technician or in a closely related field service role.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience with the installation and service of a diverse range of gate operator brands and types (hydraulic/electromechanical). A proven track record in a field service environment that includes direct customer interaction and independent problem-solving is highly valued. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is a standard requirement.
