In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the peak performance and reliability of our clients' power generation systems, including diesel, natural gas, and propane-powered generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and associated control systems. You will travel to various client sites to perform everything from routine preventive maintenance to complex emergency repairs, acting as a trusted advisor and a key representative of our company's commitment to quality and service excellence. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform routine scheduled preventive maintenance on a wide variety of industrial and commercial generator sets, including fluid and filter changes, belt adjustments, and comprehensive system inspections.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical failures in power generation systems, including engines (diesel, natural gas), alternators, control panels, and voltage regulators.
  • Execute major and minor repairs on engines and electrical systems, from component replacement to more involved overhauls, both in the field and in the shop.
  • Conduct comprehensive load bank testing to verify generator output, functionality, and endurance under full load conditions, meticulously documenting all performance data.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emergency service calls, often outside of normal business hours, to restore power for critical facilities.
  • Read, interpret, and apply complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to effectively diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Install, commission, and test new generator sets and automatic transfer switches (ATS) at customer locations, ensuring all systems operate according to manufacturer specifications and local codes.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and program Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and paralleling switchgear to ensure seamless power transition during outages.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic tools and software (e.g., Cummins InSite, CAT ET) to interface with engine and control modules for fault finding and parameter adjustment.
  • Complete detailed and accurate service reports, timecards, and parts orders in a timely manner using mobile field service software.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting directly with customers, clearly explaining diagnoses, proposed repairs, and completed work.
  • Perform warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, ensuring all required documentation and procedures are followed for successful claim submission.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict compliance with company, industry, and client safety standards, including LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures and PPE usage.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of parts, tools, and equipment on an assigned service vehicle, ensuring it is clean, organized, and ready for dispatch.
  • Calibrate and adjust generator controls and protective relays to ensure optimal performance and safe operation of the equipment.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics on AC and DC electrical systems, control circuits, and communication networks between various system components.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-site customer training on the basic operation and monitoring of their power generation equipment.
  • Assist senior technicians or project managers on large-scale installation projects, upgrades, or complex multi-unit repairs.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 emergency service coverage for our valued clients.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, new products, and updated service protocols through continuous manufacturer-led and in-house training.
  • Support the sales team by identifying opportunities for equipment upgrades, replacements, or enhanced service agreements during client interactions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Diesel and Gas Engine Expertise: Deep knowledge of the theory, repair, and maintenance of industrial diesel and natural gas engines.
  • AC/DC Electrical Theory: Strong understanding of electrical principles, including voltage, current, resistance, and power, as applied to generator systems.
  • Schematic and Blueprint Reading: Ability to proficiently read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams, control schematics, and mechanical drawings.
  • ATS and Switchgear Diagnostics: Proven experience in troubleshooting, servicing, and testing automatic transfer switches and paralleling switchgear.
  • Load Bank Testing: Competency in setting up and conducting load bank tests to verify generator performance and stability.
  • Diagnostic Software Proficiency: Experience using OEM diagnostic software (e.g., for Cummins, Caterpillar, Generac, Kohler) to connect with and diagnose electronic controls.
  • PLC and Control Systems: Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other microprocessor-based control systems used in modern generators.
  • Mechanical Systems Repair: Skilled in the hands-on repair of mechanical components, including fuel systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree, Technical Diploma, or Vocational Certificate from an accredited institution.
  • EGSA (Electrical Generating Systems Association) Technician Certification is highly desirable.

Typical Experience Range:

  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Experience in a customer-facing role is strongly preferred.
