Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Utilize specialized GIS software, particularly the Esri ArcGIS suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap) and open-source platforms like QGIS, to perform complex data creation, editing, and maintenance.
  • Conduct meticulous quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) procedures on geospatial datasets to identify and rectify topological errors, spatial inaccuracies, and attribute inconsistencies.
  • Perform heads-up digitizing and data capture from various sources, including aerial photography, satellite imagery, scanned maps, and CAD files, ensuring high levels of precision.
  • Georeference and rectify raster imagery and historical maps, aligning them with known coordinate systems to integrate them accurately into the GIS database.
  • Manage and update enterprise-level geodatabases, including tasks related to schema modification, data loading, versioning, and reconciling edits in a multi-user environment.
  • Execute complex geoprocessing tasks and spatial analyses using tools like ModelBuilder or Python scripting to automate workflows and derive new insights from data.
  • Produce high-quality, professional cartographic outputs, such as thematic maps, map series, and data visualizations for inclusion in technical reports, public presentations, and web applications.
  • Interpret and integrate data from various formats, including CAD drawings (DWG/DXF), GPS data, spreadsheets, and other database systems, into a cohesive GIS framework.
  • Maintain and update metadata records in accordance with established standards (e.g., FGDC, ISO) to ensure data lineage, quality, and usability are well-documented.
  • Perform data conversion and transformation between different file formats and coordinate systems to meet project specifications and ensure interoperability.
  • Analyze and resolve data integrity issues by researching source documents, coordinating with field crews, and applying logical data correction techniques.
  • Support the collection of field data using GPS/GNSS units and mobile data collection applications, and subsequently process and integrate this data into the central GIS.
  • Create and maintain network datasets (e.g., for roads, utilities) by ensuring proper connectivity, directionality, and attribution for network analysis.
  • Edit and maintain land base information, including parcel boundaries, rights-of-way, and easements, based on legal descriptions and survey plats.
  • Provide direct support to project managers and analysts by preparing data, maps, and figures required for project deliverables and milestones.
  • Assist in the design and management of GIS data structures and schemas to optimize for performance, scalability, and ease of use.
  • Troubleshoot issues with GIS software, tools, and data, providing technical assistance to other team members and end-users.
  • Develop and maintain scripts, primarily in Python/ArcPy, to streamline repetitive data management and analysis tasks, improving team efficiency.
  • Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, and existing maps.
  • Prepare and publish map services and web maps to platforms like ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise for consumption by web and mobile applications.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Proficiency in Esri Software: Deep, hands-on experience with the ArcGIS suite, especially ArcGIS Pro, and a working knowledge of ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Open-Source GIS Competency: Practical experience using QGIS for data editing, analysis, and map production.
  • Geospatial Data Formats: Strong understanding of vector (Shapefile, Geodatabase, GeoJSON) and raster (GeoTIFF, DEM) data formats and their appropriate uses.
