Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct a wide range of field density tests on soils, aggregates, and asphalt using nuclear density gauges and traditional methods like the sand cone to verify compaction meets project specifications.
  • Perform field testing on fresh concrete, including slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight, while also casting concrete cylinders and beams for subsequent compressive and flexural strength testing.
  • Collect, identify, and carefully log soil, rock, and aggregate samples from various sources including boreholes, test pits, and stockpiles for laboratory analysis.
  • Execute diverse laboratory tests on soil and construction materials in strict accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and other applicable industry standards.
  • Perform soil classification tests, including Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, and specific gravity, to determine the fundamental engineering properties of soil samples.
  • Operate and maintain drilling equipment for subsurface exploration, advancing borings, and retrieving high-quality samples for both visual inspection and laboratory testing.
  • Prepare and meticulously document detailed daily field reports, test summaries, and data sheets, ensuring all observations, test results, and site activities are recorded with accuracy and clarity.
  • Install, monitor, and collect data from geotechnical instrumentation, such as inclinometers, piezometers, and settlement plates, to track subsurface movements and water pressures.
  • Observe and document foundation installation, including driven piles, drilled shafts, and shallow foundations, to ensure compliance with design plans and specifications.
  • Perform floor flatness and levelness testing (FF/FL) on concrete slabs to verify they meet the specified tolerances for their intended use.
  • Conduct advanced laboratory tests on soils, such as consolidation, triaxial shear, and direct shear tests, to evaluate their strength and compressibility characteristics.
  • Communicate effectively with on-site contractors, client representatives, and senior engineering staff regarding test results, site conditions, and potential issues.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of field and laboratory testing equipment to ensure its accuracy, reliability, and readiness for use.
  • Review project plans and specifications to understand the scope of work, testing requirements, and quality control standards for each assignment.
  • Assist geotechnical engineers with site reconnaissance and preliminary evaluations to identify potential geotechnical challenges early in a project's lifecycle.
  • Conduct percolation tests to assess the water absorption rate of soil, providing critical data for the design of septic drain fields and stormwater management systems.
  • Monitor and document earthwork activities, including excavation, grading, and fill placement, to ensure proper materials and methods are being used.
  • Uphold a strong safety culture by strictly adhering to all company and site-specific health and safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provide clear, timely, and professional communication of field observations and test data to project managers, enabling them to make informed decisions.
  • Transport material samples from project sites to the laboratory, ensuring they are properly labeled, logged, and preserved to maintain their integrity for testing.
  • Assist with the preparation of formal technical reports by organizing and summarizing field and laboratory data for review by a professional engineer.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the regular maintenance, calibration scheduling, and inventory management of all field and laboratory testing equipment.
  • Provide on-site support and clarification to construction personnel regarding geotechnical specifications and proper quality control procedures.
  • Participate actively in project kick-off meetings and routine health and safety briefings, contributing to a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Support senior staff and project engineers with the compilation and organization of data for technical reports, proposals, and project closeout documents.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in conducting standard field tests, including nuclear density testing, sand cone, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP).
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory testing of soils and aggregates, such as Proctors, Atterberg limits, and sieve analysis.
  • The ability to read, understand, and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and geotechnical project specifications.
  • Deep familiarity with relevant ASTM, AASHTO, and other state/local testing standards and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of soil and rock classification systems (e.g., Unified Soil Classification System - USCS).
  • Competence in operating, maintaining, and performing field calibrations on testing equipment, especially nuclear density gauges.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification is highly desirable.
  • Other relevant certifications such as NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) in Construction Materials Testing or Geotechnical are a significant plus.
  • Solid computer skills for data entry, analysis, and report generation using software like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and industry-specific programs (e.g., gINT).
  • Experience with logging test borings and visually classifying soil and rock samples.
  • Understanding of construction quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) principles and their practical application on a job site.
