Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create, edit, and maintain complex geospatial data layers and attribute information within the enterprise geodatabase, adhering to established standards and schemas.
  • Perform detailed heads-up digitizing and georeferencing of various data sources, including raster imagery, scanned maps, and CAD files, to integrate them into the GIS environment.
  • Produce high-quality, professional cartographic products and thematic maps for reports, presentations, and public-facing materials, ensuring adherence to brand and mapping standards.
  • Conduct routine and moderately complex spatial analyses, such as buffering, overlays, proximity analysis, and network tracing, to support project requirements and answer specific geographic questions.
  • Execute data conversion and transformation tasks between different GIS formats (e.g., Shapefile, Geodatabase, KML, CAD) and coordinate systems to ensure interoperability.
  • Perform rigorous quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) checks on incoming and existing geospatial data to identify and correct errors, inconsistencies, and topological issues.
  • Manage and update metadata records for all created and modified datasets in accordance with FGDC, ISO, or other organizational standards to ensure data discoverability and usability.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for maps, data exports, and spatial information in a timely and professional manner.
  • Utilize GPS/GNSS field data collection equipment and mobile GIS applications (like ArcGIS Field Maps or Survey123) to gather and verify asset locations and attributes in the field.
  • Interpret construction drawings, as-built plans, and engineering schematics to accurately update utility networks, land parcels, or infrastructure data within the GIS.
  • Maintain and update critical infrastructure network datasets, ensuring logical connectivity and proper attribute population for modeling and analysis purposes.
  • Develop and manage scripts using Python (often with ArcPy) to automate repetitive geoprocessing tasks, data updates, and map generation workflows.
  • Provide essential technical support and troubleshooting assistance to non-GIS users who are interacting with web maps, GIS viewers, or mobile applications.
  • Prepare and organize large volumes of spatial and non-spatial data for integration into GIS projects, including data cleansing and formatting.
  • Assist in the design and maintenance of web mapping applications and dashboards using platforms like ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise Portal.
  • Generate and analyze terrain data, including creating digital elevation models (DEMs), contours, slope maps, and performing visibility analysis.
  • Conduct research to locate and acquire new geospatial datasets from public and private sources, evaluating their quality and suitability for project needs.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for all GIS workflows, procedures, and project-specific tasks to ensure repeatability and knowledge transfer.
  • Collaborate closely with planners, engineers, and scientists to understand their project goals and translate their spatial data requirements into tangible GIS tasks and products.
  • Process and analyze remote sensing data, such as satellite imagery or aerial photography, for feature extraction and change detection analysis.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GIS Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency with the Esri ArcGIS suite, particularly ArcGIS Pro, as well as experience with ArcGIS Online and related applications (Field Maps, Survey123, Dashboards).
  • Open Source GIS: Familiarity and practical experience with open-source platforms, most notably QGIS, for data viewing, editing, and analysis.
  • Geodatabase Management: Strong understanding of and experience with Esri Geodatabases, including feature classes, domains, subtypes, and relationship classes.
  • Spatial Analysis: Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of vector and raster spatial analysis techniques, including overlays, proximity tools, and surface analysis.
