Primary Functions

  • Accurately interpret technical drawings, blueprints, work orders, and CAD files to determine precise cutting dimensions, glass types, and finishing requirements.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate advanced computer-controlled (CNC) cutting tables and automated glass processing equipment, inputting programs and making adjustments for optimal performance.
  • Perform high-precision manual cutting techniques using hand cutters, straight edges, and other specialized tools for custom shapes, intricate designs, or small-scale jobs.
  • Skillfully score glass sheets along marked lines and execute clean breaks to separate pieces, minimizing waste and ensuring dimensional accuracy.
  • Operate and maintain edge finishing equipment to grind, seam, polish, and bevel the edges of cut glass to achieve specified smoothness and aesthetic quality.
  • Handle and transport large, heavy sheets of glass safely using suction cup lifters, overhead cranes, A-frames, and other material handling equipment.
  • Conduct rigorous in-process and final quality control inspections to verify dimensions, check for defects like chips or scratches, and ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Select the appropriate type, color, and thickness of glass from inventory based on job requirements, such as annealed, laminated, or tempered glass.
  • Lay out patterns, templates, or measurement markings directly onto the glass surface to guide cutting operations for complex or non-standard shapes.
  • Operate tempering furnaces or lamination lines to treat glass for enhanced safety, strength, and durability as required by building codes and product standards.
  • Manage and optimize the cutting process to maximize material yield and significantly reduce the amount of scrap glass generated.
  • Ensure all finished glass pieces are correctly labeled, organized, and staged for the next phase of production, such as assembly or shipping.
  • Perform drilling, notching, and cutout operations in glass sheets for hardware, fittings, or vents using specialized drilling equipment.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on cutting machinery and equipment to minimize downtime and ensure consistent operational efficiency.
  • Maintain a meticulously clean and organized workstation and surrounding area to promote safety and prevent damage to materials.
  • Diligently follow all company and industry safety protocols, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
  • Accurately document production data, including materials consumed, number of pieces cut, run times, and any identified defects, in production logs or computer systems.
  • Manage inventory levels of raw glass sheets and cutting supplies, communicating with supervisors or procurement when stock needs to be replenished.
  • Collaborate closely with other production team members, including glaziers and installers, to clarify project specifications and ensure a seamless workflow.
  • Assist in the secure packaging and crating of finished glass products to prevent damage during storage and transportation.
  • Provide input and recommendations for process improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and product quality within the fabrication department.

  • Advanced Cutting Proficiency: Expertise in operating both manual glass cutting tools and automated CNC cutting machinery (e.g., Hegla, Bottero, Lisec).
  • Blueprint Interpretation: The ability to expertly read and interpret complex blueprints, architectural drawings, CAD files, and technical work orders.
  • Measurement & Mathematics: Strong mathematical skills for precise calculations, conversions between imperial and metric units, and geometry for angles and shapes.
