Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate a variety of glass grinding and polishing machines, including hand-held grinders, belt sanders, and automated CNC edging equipment to shape and finish glass products.
- Carefully interpret complex blueprints, work orders, and technical specifications to determine the exact grinding, beveling, and finishing requirements for each piece of glass.
- Accurately set up and calibrate grinding machinery by adjusting guides, stops, wheel positions, and program parameters according to the specified dimensions and angles.
- Select the appropriate grinding wheels, polishing belts, and cerium compounds based on the glass type, thickness, and the desired edge finish (e.g., pencil polish, flat polish, ogee).
- Skillfully handle and position large, heavy, and often fragile glass sheets onto machine beds or worktables, frequently utilizing suction cup lifters and other material handling aids.
- Perform high-precision grinding, seaming, beveling, and polishing on the edges of flat glass, mirrors, and custom components to achieve a perfectly smooth, defect-free finish.
- Conduct rigorous in-process and final quality control checks using precision measuring instruments such as digital calipers, micrometers, and protractors to verify all dimensions and tolerances.
- Visually inspect all glass surfaces and edges for scratches, chips, swirls, and other imperfections, meticulously marking and segregating defective pieces for rework or disposal.
- Execute routine preventative maintenance and cleaning on all grinding equipment, including changing and dressing grinding wheels, checking coolant levels, and lubricating moving parts.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area, strictly adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Closely monitor machine operations during cycles, listening for unusual noises and observing performance to preemptively identify potential malfunctions or the need for fine-tuned adjustments.
- Precisely document daily production data, including the number of pieces completed, cycle times, material scrap, and any downtime, using company logbooks or digital tracking systems.
- Grind, shape, and finish custom or specialty glass pieces for unique applications, which requires a high degree of manual skill, artistic judgment, and problem-solving.
- Perform both wet and dry grinding processes, demonstrating a full understanding of the different techniques, equipment, and safety precautions required for each method.
- Deburr and smooth the rough, sharp edges of freshly cut glass to ensure it is safe for handling and processing in subsequent production stages like tempering or laminating.
Secondary Functions
- Collaborate with the cutting, tempering, and laminating departments to ensure a smooth, efficient workflow and to troubleshoot any inter-departmental quality issues.
- Assist in managing and maintaining an inventory of grinding consumables, such as wheels, belts, and coolants, and proactively notify supervisors when new materials need to be ordered.
- Prepare and carefully package finished glass products for storage or shipment, ensuring they are adequately protected to prevent breakage or surface damage during transit.
- Participate actively in daily team meetings and huddles to discuss production goals, safety topics, and any challenges from the previous shift.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by providing practical feedback and suggestions on how to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency within the grinding department.
