Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide daily hands-on care for all goats, including feeding, watering, bedding, and routine observations to detect illness, injury or abnormal behavior; escalate medical issues and coordinate treatment plans with a veterinarian.
  • Manage and execute milking routines (for dairy operations): operate and maintain milking equipment, ensure milk hygiene, monitor somatic cell counts and bacterial counts, and implement corrective actions to protect milk quality and safety.
  • Plan and implement herd reproductive programs including heat detection, controlled breeding, artificial insemination or natural service scheduling, pregnancy checking, and creating seasonal kidding calendars to meet production goals.
  • Oversee kidding and neonatal care: assist with difficult births, provide colostrum management, perform kid nurturing practices (docking, disbudding where legal, navel care), and set up appropriate housing and supplemental feeding for young stock.
  • Maintain and update detailed herd records: individual animal IDs, breeding histories, vaccination and medication logs, production metrics, weight and growth charts, and culling decisions to inform management and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and supervise herd health programs including vaccination schedules, parasite control (strategic deworming and fecal egg counts), hoof trimming schedules, and routine preventive care to minimize disease and maximize longevity and productivity.
  • Implement and enforce biosecurity protocols across the farm: quarantine procedures for new animals, visitor controls, sanitation schedules, and disease outbreak contingency planning.
  • Design and manage grazing and forage systems: rotational grazing plans, pasture rest schedules, forage assessments, and supplemental feeding strategies to optimize animal nutrition and pasture health.
  • Handle feed sourcing and ration formulation: assess hay and feed quality, create balanced rations for different production stages (lactation, gestation, growth), manage feed inventories and supplier relationships.
  • Operate, maintain and repair farm machinery and equipment including tractors, loaders, fencing tools, graders, trailers, and milking systems to ensure safe and continuous operation.
  • Install, maintain and repair fencing and shelters to secure pastures, protect animals from predators, and provide weather-appropriate housing and shade.
  • Plan and execute humane handling procedures and animal movement operations for loading/unloading, market preparation, and shows, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations.
  • Lead and train seasonal workers, apprentices, and family staff on animal handling, milking protocols, safety procedures, and record-keeping best practices to maintain consistent herd care.
  • Monitor herd performance metrics and produce regular reports on reproduction rates, milk yield or meat weights, feed conversion ratios, cull rates, and other KPIs to support business decisions and continuous improvement.
  • Execute humane culling and sale protocols, prepare animals for market or slaughter, work with buyers/processors, and manage logistics to maintain meat and breeding stock quality.
  • Maintain farm cleanliness, manure management and nutrient plan implementation, coordinating composting, manure spreading and environmental stewardship practices to meet local regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations including food safety (for dairy operations), animal health reporting, agricultural land use and environmental laws; prepare for inspections and audits.
  • Manage inventory and procurement for veterinary supplies, feed, fencing materials, bedding, and milking consumables while optimizing cost and maintaining quality standards.
  • Coordinate on-farm product handling and value-add activities such as milk cooling, pasteurization, cheesemaking, packaging, and direct-to-consumer sales channels (farm store, farmers markets, online), including quality control and labeling compliance.
  • Respond to emergencies: implement isolation and treatment for sick or injured animals, facilitate emergency veterinary care, and maintain emergency contact plans and first-aid supplies.
  • Develop and implement herd improvement strategies such as selective breeding programs, record-based selection for milk/meat/conformation traits, and integration of genetic tools (AI, ET) to enhance herd value over time.
  • Participate in budgeting and basic farm financial management: cost tracking, pricing of animals/products, record keeping for subsidies/grants, and contribution to business planning for farm expansion or diversification.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in small-scale processing tasks such as pasteurization and artisan cheesemaking, ensuring food-safety protocols and product traceability are upheld.
  • Support on-farm marketing and sales efforts: represent the farm at farmers’ markets, manage direct customer relationships, update website and social media with farm stories, and handle basic order fulfillment.
  • Help with farm infrastructure projects including building maintenance, electrics for fencing and sheds, drainage improvements, and contractor coordination.
  • Contribute to grant applications, sustainability certifications (organic, animal welfare programs), and record submission for agricultural support programs.
  • Host or support farm tours, educational workshops and school visits that promote animal welfare, regenerative grazing, and local food systems.
  • Assist in basic bookkeeping tasks related to livestock sales, milk sales, feed purchases and tracking seasonal labor costs; coordinate with the farm accountant or bookkeeper.
  • Maintain and sanitize animal housing, milk rooms, feed storage and equipment per a scheduled cleaning program to preserve animal health and product quality.
  • Participate in local producer networks, extension programs, and continuing education to remain current on best practices for parasite control, breeding technologies and pasture management.
  • Coordinate logistics for animal transport, veterinary visits, and cooperative arrangements with neighboring farms for pasturing or breeding services.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
