Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet and engage clients in a professional, welcoming manner to build immediate rapport and trust throughout the evaluation and transaction process.
  • Conduct a thorough and methodical initial inspection of jewelry, coins, and other items presented by customers to identify potential materials for testing.
  • Expertly conduct precise testing of gold, silver, and platinum using industry-standard methods, including acid scratch tests and electronic gold testers, to accurately determine purity and karat value.
  • Operate high-precision digital scales to obtain exact weight measurements of precious metals, ensuring complete accuracy for valuation calculations.
  • Calculate the market value and payout offers for customer items based on current metal market spot prices, item weight, and purity, adhering strictly to company pricing policies.
  • Clearly and patiently explain the entire testing and valuation process to customers, ensuring they understand how the final offer was determined to foster transparency and confidence.
  • Skillfully present and negotiate purchase offers with clients, aiming to secure the acquisition of their items while maintaining a positive customer relationship and adhering to margin goals.
  • Process all transactions accurately using the Point of Sale (POS) system, including handling cash, issuing checks, or processing other forms of payment securely.
  • Diligently complete and maintain all required transactional paperwork, including customer identification verification and detailed logs, to ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., anti-money laundering laws).
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of daily fluctuations in the precious metals market (gold, silver, platinum) to ensure all offers are accurate and competitive.
  • Assist the Lead Gold Buyer or Store Manager with more complex or high-value appraisals and transactions, using these opportunities for professional development.
  • Securely manage and organize all purchased inventory, properly labeling and storing items according to company protocol for eventual processing or resale.
  • Act as a vigilant gatekeeper against fraudulent transactions by carefully inspecting items for counterfeits and verifying customer identity documents with a high degree of scrutiny.
  • Prepare and package purchased scrap metal and other items for secure shipment to refineries or other central processing facilities.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and respond to electronic inquiries from potential clients regarding the buying process, store hours, and types of items purchased.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure workstation, ensuring all testing equipment and tools are properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing and resolving any client concerns or disputes with professionalism and empathy.
  • Educate potential sellers on the value of different types of precious metals and diamonds, positioning yourself as a knowledgeable and trustworthy expert.
  • Identify and test for diamonds and other prominent gemstones using thermal conductivity testers and other gemological tools to assess their authenticity.
  • Uphold the highest level of confidentiality and discretion regarding all client information and transaction details.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Precision Scale Operation: Ability to accurately operate and read digital gram scales to a high degree of precision.
  • Valuation Calculation: Strong mathematical skills to accurately calculate item values based on weight, purity, and fluctuating market prices.
  • POS Systems: Experience operating Point of Sale (POS) software for processing transactions and managing customer data.
