Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously perform multi-step fire assays (cupellation and parting) on gold, silver, and platinum group metal (PGM) samples to determine their precise purity and composition.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain advanced analytical instrumentation, including X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers, to conduct non-destructive elemental analysis.
  • Accurately weigh precious metal samples, bars, and dore using high-precision electronic balances, ensuring all measurements are recorded and verified.
  • Prepare and process diverse sample types, including drill cores, bullion, jewelry, and industrial scrap, using techniques like melting, pulverizing, and chemical digestion.
  • Conduct wet chemistry techniques, such as titrations and gravimetric analysis, to verify assay results and analyze complex alloys.
  • Analyze and interpret data from Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect trace elements and impurities.
  • Diligently document all testing procedures, observations, and final assay results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with unwavering attention to detail.
  • Prepare and certify detailed Certificates of Analysis (COA) for finished products, ensuring they comply with international standards like LBMA Good Delivery.
  • Execute comprehensive quality control checks and run standard reference materials alongside samples to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of all analytical results.
  • Identify and troubleshoot discrepancies in assay results, conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Manage the secure handling, tracking, and storage of high-value customer materials and samples throughout the entire inspection and assaying process.
  • Perform physical inspections of gold bars and other products, checking for correct weight, dimensions, markings, and any surface-level inconsistencies or signs of tampering.
  • Strictly adhere to all established safety protocols and environmental regulations, including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals like nitric acid and cyanide.
  • Assist in the development, validation, and implementation of new analytical methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory workspace to prevent cross-contamination and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Calculate and confirm metal yields and losses during the refining process, providing crucial data for inventory reconciliation and process optimization.
  • Collaborate with refinery operators and production staff to provide timely feedback on material quality and help resolve any production-related quality issues.
  • Participate in internal and external proficiency testing programs to maintain laboratory accreditation and demonstrate ongoing competency.
  • Train junior technicians and new team members on proper assaying techniques, safety procedures, and the operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Manage the inventory of laboratory consumables, chemicals, and certified reference materials, placing orders as needed to prevent work stoppages.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Fire Assaying: Expertise in the complete fire assay process, including fluxing, fusion, cupellation, and parting for gold and silver.
  • X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry: Proficient in the operation, calibration, and data interpretation of both handheld and benchtop XRF analyzers.
  • ICP-OES / ICP-MS Operation: Experience in sample preparation, instrument operation, and analysis for trace element determination in precious metals.

Experience Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience specifically in gold and PGM fire assaying within a refinery, mining, or hallmarking setting. Experience with ISO 17025 accredited laboratory environments is highly desirable.
