Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive agronomic program to maintain the golf course at championship levels, including detailed plans for fertilization, pest management, and soil conditioning.
  • Direct and oversee all mowing, grooming, and cultivation practices for greens, tees, fairways, and roughs to ensure optimal turf health and playability.
  • Manage and operate the course's irrigation system, conducting regular audits and adjustments to ensure efficient water usage and uniform moisture distribution.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a diverse team of groundskeepers and maintenance staff, fostering a culture of safety, productivity, and professional development.
  • Prepare and manage the annual golf course maintenance budget, including forecasting expenses for labor, equipment, and capital improvement projects.
  • Oversee the procurement of all necessary supplies and materials, such as fertilizers, pesticides, seeds, and sand, ensuring cost-effectiveness and proper inventory control.
  • Plan, execute, and supervise all golf course construction, renovation, and special projects in collaboration with architects, contractors, and club management.
  • Establish and enforce a comprehensive safety program for the maintenance department, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA standards.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all maintenance activities, chemical applications, and weather data to inform future agronomic decisions and regulatory reporting.
  • Calibrate and manage all application equipment to ensure precise and safe distribution of fertilizers and plant protectants.
  • Develop and manage an integrated pest management (IPM) program that prioritizes environmental stewardship and minimizes chemical use.
  • Regularly inspect all areas of the golf course and grounds to identify potential issues and proactively implement corrective actions.
  • Communicate effectively with the General Manager, Head Golf Professional, and club committees, providing regular updates on course conditions and upcoming projects.
  • Manage the maintenance, repair, and replacement schedule for the club's fleet of turf equipment.
  • Oversee the maintenance and aesthetics of all non-turf areas, including landscape beds, trees, lakes, and cart paths.
  • Prepare the course for daily play and special events, including tournaments and member-guest outings, ensuring flawless setup and presentation.

Secondary Functions

  • Engage with members and guests to provide information about course conditions and agronomic practices, enhancing their overall experience.
  • Represent the club within the local community and professional organizations like the GCSAA to stay current with industry trends and best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced knowledge of turfgrass science, soil science, and the principles of agronomy.
  • Expertise in managing various turfgrass species, particularly in the local climate (e.g., Bentgrass, Bermuda, Poa Annua).
  • Proficiency with modern golf course irrigation systems (Toro, Rain Bird) and water management techniques.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget creation, forecasting, and expense control.
  • State-issued Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to obtain one shortly after hire.
  • Experience with project management for course improvement or renovation projects.
  • Mechanical aptitude for overseeing the diagnosis and repair of turf maintenance equipment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's Degree (A.A.) or a two-year certificate in a relevant field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-10 years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance operations.

Preferred: At least 3 years of experience as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at a reputable private or high-end resort course. Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) is highly desirable. Experience managing a course through seasonal transitions and extreme weather events is a significant plus.
