The Golf Maintenance Assistant is a foundational role within the Golf Course Maintenance department, serving as the hands-on force responsible for the daily upkeep and long-term health of the golf course. This position is integral to delivering a world-class playing experience for all members and guests. Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents, the Maintenance Assistant executes a wide range of agronomic and landscaping tasks. This role requires a keen eye for detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions to ensure that the turfgrass, bunkers, and overall course landscape meet the highest standards of quality and playability.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate precision walk-mowing equipment to maintain greens, tees, and collars to exacting height-of-cut standards, ensuring a superior putting surface.
  • Utilize larger reel and rotary mowers for the efficient and high-quality mowing of fairways, roughs, and clubhouse grounds.
  • Execute daily course setup procedures, including meticulously changing hole locations on greens, repositioning tee markers, and placing directional ropes and stakes.
  • Maintain sand bunkers to tournament-ready standards by raking, edging, redistributing sand, and ensuring proper depth and playability.
  • Perform sodding, seeding, and sprigging projects to repair damaged turf areas resulting from play, stress, or construction.
  • Operate utility vehicles safely and proficiently for transporting tools, materials, staff, and debris across the course property.
  • Assist in the application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other soil amendments under the direct supervision of a licensed applicator, following all safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and minor repairs on the irrigation system, including replacing damaged sprinkler heads, fixing line breaks, and hand-watering critical areas.
  • Fill fairway and tee box divots with a sand and seed mixture to promote rapid turf recovery and maintain a smooth playing surface.
  • Perform detailed landscape maintenance, including edging cart paths, pruning shrubs and small trees, and managing flower beds.
  • Assist with intensive cultural practices essential for turf health, such as core aeration, verticutting, and topdressing greens and tees.
  • Safely operate specialized turf equipment, such as aerifiers, topdressers, tractors, and blowers, after receiving proper training.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the maintenance facility, break room, and equipment wash-down areas.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, including cleaning, checking fluid levels, and reporting any mechanical issues to the Equipment Manager.
  • Support course improvement or renovation projects, which may involve grading, shaping, and drainage installation tasks.
  • Remove unwanted debris from the course, including fallen leaves, branches, trash, and other obstructions.
  • Monitor course conditions vigilantly throughout the day and report any issues such as turf stress, disease presence, or irrigation failures to a supervisor.
  • Hand-water greens, collars, and other high-stress turf areas as directed to supplement automated irrigation and prevent wilting.
  • Calibrate and operate spreaders for the precise application of granular fertilizers and other control products.
  • Edge and define waterways, landscape beds, and other course features to maintain a sharp, manicured appearance.
  • Participate in all departmental training sessions on safety, equipment operation, and agronomic best practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in snow removal from club access roads, cart paths, and parking lots during winter months, as required by climate.
  • Provide direct support for on-site golf tournaments and special events, ensuring the course is in peak condition and meeting specific event requirements.
  • Interact professionally and courteously with golfers on the course, answering basic directional questions and ensuring their playing experience is not negatively impacted by maintenance activities.
  • Participate actively in departmental safety meetings and consistently adhere to all club and OSHA-mandated safety standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating various types of commercial-grade turf maintenance equipment (e.g., reel mowers, rotary mowers, string trimmers, blowers).
  • Basic understanding of turfgrass science, plant health, and the principles of golf course agronomy.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, including head adjustment, nozzle replacement, and minor leak repair.
  • Ability to safely operate power tools and small engine equipment.
  • Familiarity with the proper techniques for raking, edging, and maintaining sand bunkers.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain a state pesticide applicator's license or certificate if required.
  • Competency in driving manual and automatic transmission vehicles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree in a related field.

  • Turfgrass Management / Turfgrass Science

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in golf course maintenance, professional landscaping, sports turf management, or a related field.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working on a golf course is highly desirable. A demonstrated passion for the game of golf and a solid understanding of course etiquette is a significant advantage.
