Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate commercial vehicles (such as box trucks, tractor-trailers, or flatbeds) over various distances to transport freight, adhering to all traffic laws and established delivery schedules.
Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle's mechanical systems and safety equipment, including tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water levels.
Safely and securely load and unload cargo, ensuring proper weight distribution, securing freight using straps, blocks, and tarps to prevent damage or shifting during transit.
Maintain meticulous and accurate records as required by law and company policy, including driver logbooks, vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs), and fuel and mileage records using Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs).
Verify all shipping documentation (bills of lading, manifests, invoices) against the loaded cargo to ensure accuracy and obtain necessary signatures upon delivery.
Plan and optimize driving routes to ensure timely deliveries, considering traffic conditions, weather, and legal driving hour restrictions.
Communicate effectively and professionally with dispatchers, providing regular updates on location, progress, and any delays or issues encountered on the road.
Adhere strictly to all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, including hours-of-service rules.
Maintain the cleanliness and general maintenance of the vehicle, reporting any mechanical issues or necessary repairs to the fleet management team immediately.
Provide exceptional customer service during pickup and delivery interactions, representing the organization in a professional and courteous manner.
Maneuver trucks into tight loading or unloading positions, demonstrating advanced spatial awareness and vehicle control in various environments like docks, warehouses, and construction sites.

Navigate effectively using GPS and other routing systems, while also being proficient with traditional map reading as a backup.
Handle hazardous materials according to all applicable federal and state guidelines, including proper placarding and handling procedures (if certified).
