Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately and efficiently pick customer orders for shipment using a pick list or RF scanner, ensuring the correct number and type of product is selected.
  • Safely operate a variety of manual and powered material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies to move goods within the warehouse.
  • Load and unload merchandise from trucks, trailers, and shipping containers, employing proper lifting techniques and safety procedures to prevent injury and product damage.
  • Sort, place, and stage materials or items on racks, shelves, or in bins according to predetermined sequences like product code, size, type, or color.
  • Utilize handheld scanners and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to accurately track inventory movements, process orders, and maintain real-time data integrity.
  • Meticulously pack and prepare orders for shipment, selecting the appropriate packing materials to ensure products are secure and protected during transit.
  • Affix correct shipping labels, packing slips, and other required documentation to outbound packages to guarantee proper routing and delivery.
  • Conduct thorough quality checks on incoming and outgoing products, identifying and reporting any damage, defects, or discrepancies to a supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment by performing regular housekeeping duties such as sweeping, removing debris, and organizing storage areas.
  • Perform regular inventory cycle counts and assist in full physical inventories to ensure system records align with physical stock on hand.
  • Receive and process incoming stock and materials, verifying items against purchase orders or invoices and noting any variations.
  • Wrap and secure pallets with shrink wrap, either manually or using an automated wrapper, to ensure stability for storage and transportation.
  • Process customer returns by inspecting returned items for condition and serviceability, and routing them for restocking, repair, or disposal.
  • Assemble customer orders from various stock locations and place them on pallets or shelves, or convey orders to the packing station or shipping department.
  • Consolidate partial pallets and reorganize stock to maximize warehouse space and improve picking efficiency.
  • Adhere strictly to all company health, safety, and security protocols, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Report any potential hazards, safety concerns, or equipment malfunctions to management immediately to ensure a safe workplace for all.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments to coordinate activities and resolve any operational challenges.
  • Weigh and count items for distribution within a plant to ensure conformance to company standards and record amounts of materials or items received or distributed.
  • Monitor product quality and shelf-life, rotating stock on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis to minimize spoilage or obsolescence.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new team members by demonstrating proper procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.
  • Participate actively in team meetings to discuss performance metrics, safety topics, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Perform minor maintenance and pre-operation safety checks on material handling equipment to ensure it is in safe working order.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives by suggesting more efficient ways to handle goods, reduce waste, and organize the workspace.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Operation: Proficiency with manual pallet jacks, dollies, and other non-powered equipment. Forklift or power jack experience is a significant advantage.
  • RF Scanner Usage: Experience using handheld radio-frequency scanners for picking, put-away, and inventory tasks.
  • Warehouse Management System (WMS) Familiarity: Basic ability to interact with WMS software to look up orders, track inventory, and confirm tasks.
  • Inventory Counting: Skill in performing accurate cycle counts and participating in physical inventory audits.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: Ability to perform simple data entry, look up information, and print labels.
  • Knowledge of Safety Procedures: Understanding of fundamental workplace safety standards (e.g., proper lifting, PPE usage, hazard awareness).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-3 years of experience in a warehouse, manufacturing, distribution, or similar environment.

Preferred:

  • 1+ year of direct experience as a goods handler, material handler, order picker, or in a similar role. Previous experience in a fast-paced distribution environment and possession of a valid forklift certification are highly desirable.
