As our Government Liaison, you will be the architect of our public affairs strategy, responsible for building and nurturing strong relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and their staff. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively monitor, track, and analyze pending legislation, regulations, and public policy initiatives at local, state, and federal levels to identify potential impacts, risks, and opportunities for the organization.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive government relations and advocacy strategies to positively influence policy outcomes and advance the organization's strategic objectives.
  • Cultivate, maintain, and strengthen relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, agency decision-makers, and key influencers within government.
  • Represent the organization in meetings, legislative hearings, industry coalitions, and public forums to articulate our positions and advocate for our interests.
  • Draft, prepare, and deliver persuasive written materials, including policy briefs, position papers, formal comments on proposed rules, talking points, and testimony for legislative committees.
  • Advise senior leadership and executive teams on the political and regulatory landscape, providing strategic counsel on potential government actions and their implications for business operations.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all federal, state, and local lobbying disclosure laws, ethics regulations, and campaign finance rules.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams, including Legal, Communications, Operations, and Finance, to ensure alignment on public policy positions and a unified approach to government engagement.
  • Manage relationships with and the performance of external government affairs consultants, lobbyists, and trade associations to maximize their effectiveness and ROI.
  • Identify and pursue government funding opportunities, including grants, incentives, and public-private partnerships that align with organizational goals.
  • Organize and lead legislative "fly-in" days, site tours, and other events for policymakers to educate them about our organization's value and impact.
  • Respond to inquiries from government offices and regulatory agencies in a timely and professional manner, serving as the official point of contact.
  • Develop and manage the government affairs budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Interpret complex legislative and regulatory documents, translating legal and bureaucratic language into clear business-oriented summaries and action plans.
  • Build and lead grassroots and grasstops advocacy campaigns by mobilizing employees, customers, and other stakeholders to support key policy initiatives.
  • Track voting records and public statements of key officials on issues relevant to the organization's interests to better inform engagement strategies.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert on the political process, providing training and guidance to colleagues on effective government engagement.
  • Facilitate the development of the organization's annual public policy agenda in consultation with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare detailed briefing materials, backgrounders, and pre-meeting reports for executives ahead of their interactions with government officials.
  • Foster and participate in coalitions with peer companies and industry associations to amplify advocacy efforts on issues of mutual interest.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Public Policy (MPP), Public Administration (MPA), or a Juris Doctor (J.D.).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-12 years of progressive experience in government relations, public affairs, or a related field.

  • Direct experience working on Capitol Hill, in a state legislature, or for a federal/state executive branch agency.
  • A demonstrable track record of successfully influencing legislation or regulation.
  • Pre-existing, bipartisan relationships with key government stakeholders relevant to our industry.
  • Experience managing a Political Action Committee (PAC) and/or grassroots advocacy programs.
