Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute sophisticated, multi-year government affairs strategies that align with the organization's long-term business objectives and public mission.
  • Conduct continuous, in-depth analysis of proposed legislation, administrative rules, and regulatory dockets at the local, state, and federal levels to assess their potential impact on operations and strategic interests.
  • Provide high-level strategic counsel and actionable intelligence to C-suite executives and senior leadership, translating complex government actions into clear business risks and opportunities.
  • Proactively identify, build, and nurture strong, trust-based relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, agency leaders, and key influencers within the government ecosystem.
  • Serve as the primary representative and advocate for the organization in high-stakes meetings, legislative hearings, industry coalitions, and policy-making forums.
  • Lead the creation of the organization's official policy positions, drafting compelling white papers, detailed briefing materials, formal responses to public consultations, and public testimony.
  • Monitor the political landscape and geopolitical trends to forecast potential shifts in policy priorities, providing leadership with crucial foresight for long-range strategic planning.
  • Design and manage comprehensive advocacy campaigns, leveraging data, grassroots support, and targeted communications to influence policy debates and achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with internal legal, communications, marketing, and operational teams to ensure a consistent, unified, and impactful approach to all external-facing government engagement.
  • Identify and cultivate strategic opportunities for public-private partnerships, government grants, and other collaborative ventures that advance shared goals.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and return on investment of all government relations activities, using key metrics to report progress to leadership and refine future strategies.
  • Manage the selection and performance of external government affairs consultants, lobbying firms, and legal counsel to ensure they provide maximum value and are aligned with organizational goals.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare and coach senior executives for effective engagement with government officials, including developing talking points, Q&A documents, and background briefings for hearings and meetings.
  • Oversee the strategy, administration, and compliance for the organization's Political Action Committee (PAC) or other political engagement programs, where applicable.
  • Organize and execute impactful events, facility tours, and policy roundtables designed to educate policymakers and their staff about the organization's contributions and perspectives.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 7-15+ years of progressively responsible experience in government, public affairs, or a related field.

Preferred: Direct experience working on Capitol Hill, in a state legislature, within a federal or state government agency, at a public affairs firm, or in a corporate government relations department is highly valued and often essential.
