Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize and create high-quality, game-ready 3D models for a diverse range of assets, including environmental props, structures, foliage, and hero assets, adhering strictly to the project's art direction.
- Develop and author photorealistic and stylized textures using PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows, ensuring materials respond correctly to light and environment.
- Sculpt detailed high-poly digital models of characters, creatures, and hard-surface objects using software like ZBrush, then bake these details onto optimized, low-poly meshes.
- Create clean, efficient, and non-overlapping UV layouts for complex assets to maximize texture resolution and fidelity.
- Translate 2D concept art and design briefs into fully realized 3D assets, capturing the intended mood, style, and narrative function while problem-solving for the 3D space.
- Optimize game assets by managing polygon counts, creating levels of detail (LODs), and optimizing texture memory to ensure smooth performance on target platforms without sacrificing visual quality.
- Collaborate closely with senior artists, animators, designers, and engineers to ensure the seamless integration and functionality of art assets within the game engine.
- Work within the established art direction, style guides, and technical constraints of the project to maintain a cohesive and consistent visual experience.
- Implement, review, and troubleshoot your assets within the game engine (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity), ensuring they are correctly set up with materials, shaders, and collision.
- Actively participate in daily stand-ups and weekly art reviews, professionally presenting your work-in-progress and effectively incorporating constructive feedback from leads and peers.
- Create compelling environmental assets and set pieces that contribute to immersive world-building and enhance narrative storytelling.
- Assist in lighting scenes and setting up post-processing effects under the guidance of lead artists to achieve the desired atmosphere and visual polish.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical and artistic issues as they arise during the production pipeline, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills.
- Manage personal tasks and deadlines effectively using project management tools like Jira or Asana, ensuring milestones are met on time.
- Develop an understanding of the entire art production pipeline, from initial concept to final in-game implementation.
- Generate supporting 2D assets, such as icons, UI elements, or illustrative marketing pieces, as required by the project.
- Create basic rigs and skin simple props or secondary characters to prepare them for animation.
- Author and adjust materials and shaders directly within the game engine to achieve specific surface qualities and visual effects.
- Perform quality assurance checks on your own work and that of your peers to identify and rectify visual bugs or technical errors.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and new artistic techniques in real-time graphics and digital content creation.
- Maintain a proactive approach to learning proprietary studio tools and workflows under the guidance of mentors and documentation.
Secondary Functions
- Actively participate in team critiques, art reviews, and brainstorming sessions, offering constructive input and graciously receiving feedback to foster a collaborative environment.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of documentation for art pipelines, tools, and asset creation best practices.
- Support the lead artist and production team by helping to organize, name, and manage the project's digital asset library according to studio conventions.
- Dedicate time to continuous professional development, staying abreast of new software, techniques, and artistic trends relevant to your role and the industry.
