Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently collect, compile, and scrub vast datasets from diverse sources, including government reports (e.g., USDA, WASDE), private forecasts, weather models, and shipping logistics.
  • Meticulously maintain and enhance complex Excel spreadsheets and internal databases that form the backbone of our analytical models and trading strategies.
  • Generate and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly market intelligence reports, summaries, and commentaries for internal stakeholders, including traders and senior management.
  • Construct and update fundamental supply and demand (S&D) balance sheets for key grains and oilseeds across various countries and regions.
  • Monitor and track real-time market news, vessel lineups, freight rates, and competitor activities, flagging significant developments for the team.
  • Assist in the preparation of charts, graphs, and presentations that visually communicate complex market data and analytical findings.
  • Perform data integrity checks and validation to ensure all information used for analysis and decision-making is accurate and reliable.
  • Track daily cash basis levels, futures market movements, and option volatilities, inputting data into proprietary tracking systems.
  • Provide initial analysis and commentary on crop progress, weather patterns, and planting/harvest conditions in key growing regions worldwide.
  • Support the team in monitoring geopolitical events, trade policy changes, and currency fluctuations that could impact grain flows and prices.
  • Learn and apply fundamental analytical techniques to assist in forecasting crop yields, demand trends, and price movements.
  • Manage and organize subscriptions to industry publications, data providers, and research services, ensuring the team has access to necessary resources.
  • Respond to routine data inquiries from the trading and merchandising desks, providing prompt and accurate information.
  • Document and maintain standard operating procedures for data collection and report generation to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Participate in team meetings to understand market strategy and contribute by providing foundational data-driven observations.

Secondary Functions

  • Support senior analysts with ad-hoc data requests and contribute to exploratory analysis for special research projects.
  • Assist in back-testing analytical models and trading strategies to evaluate their historical performance.
  • Collaborate with IT or data science teams to troubleshoot data feed issues or help specify requirements for new analytical tools and dashboards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel: Mastery of pivot tables, complex formulas (VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, logical functions), and charting is essential. Experience with VBA/Macros is a significant plus.
