Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and control a variety of grain handling equipment, including but not limited to conveyor belts, bucket elevators, drags, and augers to safely and efficiently transfer grain.
  • Direct and manage the loading and unloading of grain from trucks and railcars, ensuring proper positioning, flow rates, and documentation.
  • Perform comprehensive grain quality testing by obtaining representative samples using probes and conducting analysis for factors like moisture, test weight, and foreign material.
  • Accurately record and maintain detailed logs of all grain movements, inventory levels, and quality data using both manual ledgers and computer-based systems.
  • Execute grain conditioning activities, such as drying and aeration, by operating dryers and monitoring fan systems to maintain optimal grain quality in storage.
  • Conduct routine housekeeping and cleaning of the entire facility, including tunnels, elevators, and grounds, to ensure a safe, compliant, and hazard-free work environment.
  • Perform preventative and minor maintenance on grain handling machinery and equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
  • Visually inspect and monitor all equipment during operation to proactively identify potential issues, such as misalignment, unusual noises, or overheating.
  • Strictly adhere to all company, state, and federal (OSHA) safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, and fall protection protocols.
  • Operate computerized control systems to manage and direct the flow of grain throughout the elevator, opening and closing gates and distributors as required.
  • Assist in managing grain inventory by physically measuring bin levels, tracking commodity types and grades, and reporting discrepancies to management.
  • Skillfully operate mobile equipment such as skid steers, front-end loaders, and forklifts to move grain, materials, and equipment around the facility.
  • Perform thorough clean-out procedures for grain bins, pits, and tunnels, which may involve sweeping, shoveling, and operating vacuum systems.
  • Communicate effectively with truck drivers, farmers, and team members to coordinate receiving and shipping schedules and provide excellent customer service.
  • Operate truck scales and grading equipment, accurately entering weights and grades into the system to generate scale tickets and settlement information.
  • Assist with the blending of different grain commodities to meet specific customer quality specifications and contract requirements.
  • Monitor stored grain conditions through regular temperature checks and visual inspections to prevent spoilage and identify pest activity.
  • Participate actively in all required safety training sessions and team meetings, contributing to a proactive safety culture within the facility.
  • Work safely at significant heights, including climbing ladders to the top of grain bins and elevator legs for inspections and maintenance tasks.
  • Prepare railcars and trucks for loading, which includes inspecting for cleanliness and structural integrity, and properly sealing them post-loading.

  • Assist maintenance personnel with more complex repairs, shutdowns, and new equipment installations as needed.
  • Contribute to facility improvement projects by providing operational insight and hands-on support.
  • Train seasonal or new team members on basic operational tasks and fundamental safety protocols.
  • Provide support for grounds maintenance, including mowing and snow removal, to ensure year-round site accessibility and safety.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Grain Handling Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating conveyors, bucket elevators, augers, and drags.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor issues, and assist with repairs.
  • Grain Grading and Sampling: Skill in using probes to take representative samples and test for moisture, test weight, and foreign material.
  • Heavy Machinery Operation: Licensed or experienced in operating skid steers, front-end loaders, and forklifts in an industrial environment.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred: 1+ years of experience in a grain elevator, farm operation, or a similar industrial/agricultural setting is highly valued. We are willing to train motivated individuals with a strong mechanical aptitude and commitment to safety.
