Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and refine a dynamic and cohesive grammar and composition curriculum aligned with institutional standards and student needs.
  • Deliver engaging, clear, and differentiated lessons on a wide array of English grammar topics, from basic sentence structure to complex syntax and stylistic conventions.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that encourages active student participation, inquiry, and collaborative learning.
  • Design, administer, and evaluate a variety of formal and informal assessments, including diagnostics, quizzes, essays, and projects, to accurately measure student progress and mastery.
  • Provide targeted, constructive, and timely feedback on all student work, guiding them through the revision process to improve clarity, precision, and style.
  • Utilize a diverse range of pedagogical methods and instructional materials to accommodate various learning styles, abilities, and language backgrounds (including ESL/ELL).
  • Mentor students in developing critical thinking skills by analyzing texts, deconstructing arguments, and understanding the rhetorical impact of grammatical choices.
  • Integrate educational technology, digital resources, and online platforms to create interactive learning experiences and supplement traditional instruction.
  • Maintain meticulous and up-to-date records of student performance, including grades, attendance, and detailed progress reports for internal and external communication.
  • Plan and execute the full writing process with students, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting, peer-review, and final polishing.
  • Cultivate a genuine appreciation and curiosity for the English language, its history, and its evolution.
  • Establish and consistently enforce clear classroom expectations and procedures to create a focused and efficient learning atmosphere.
  • Prepare students for the linguistic and writing demands of higher education and standardized examinations (e.g., SAT, ACT, AP).
  • Provide individualized and small-group instruction to address specific learning gaps and to challenge high-achieving students.
  • Guide students in understanding and avoiding plagiarism while correctly implementing citation styles like MLA and APA.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow English department faculty to ensure vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment and to share best practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain open, professional, and proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
  • Actively participate in faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and school-wide committees to contribute to the institutional community.
  • Sponsor or advise extracurricular activities related to language and writing, such as a school newspaper, literary magazine, or debate club.
  • Support ad-hoc requests for student performance data and contribute to the exploratory analysis of learning trends to inform instructional strategy.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data-driven instructional strategy and curriculum development roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units and other academic departments to translate cross-curricular literacy needs into targeted grammar and writing instruction.
  • Participate in sprint planning, curriculum mapping sessions, and agile-style review ceremonies within the English department and academic teams.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • State-level teaching certification/licensure in English or Language Arts (or in progress).

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in English, Linguistics, Rhetoric & Composition, or Education.
  • TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA certification.
