Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive agronomic program designed to produce elite turf conditions and plant health.
  • Meticulously scout, identify, and diagnose turfgrass diseases, insect infestations, and abiotic stresses to enable proactive treatment.
  • Design and execute advanced Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, prioritizing cultural and biological controls over chemical applications.
  • Manage a sophisticated soil fertility program, including regular soil and tissue sampling, interpretation of lab results, and precise nutrient application.
  • Direct all aspects of the irrigation system, including scheduling, moisture level monitoring, system audits, and repairs to ensure optimal water use efficiency.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute critical cultural practices such as core aeration, sand topdressing, verticutting, and overseeding to manage organic matter and improve turf density.
  • Expertly calibrate and operate a wide range of turf application equipment to ensure the accurate and safe delivery of fertilizers, pesticides, and other plant health products.
  • Maintain impeccable, detailed records of all chemical and fertilizer applications, ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., EPA, Department of Agriculture).
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the turf care department, including forecasting expenses, procuring necessary supplies, and controlling labor costs.
  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of groundskeepers and technicians, fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous professional development.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with management, clients, or club members regarding current turf conditions, maintenance schedules, and long-term agronomic plans.
  • Evaluate, select, and introduce appropriate turfgrass species and innovative cultivars best suited for the specific climate, soil, and usage requirements.
  • Monitor, interpret, and leverage weather data to make proactive and timely adjustments to daily and weekly turf management plans.
  • Establish and enforce rigorous safety protocols for all grounds maintenance operations, including equipment handling and chemical storage.
  • Prepare and maintain pristine, high-performance playing surfaces for golf tournaments or athletic events, ensuring they meet exacting standards for playability and aesthetics.
  • Conduct thorough on-site assessments and consultations, providing expert agronomic recommendations to clients or internal stakeholders.
  • Remain at the forefront of the industry by continuously researching and evaluating the latest technologies, products, and best practices in turfgrass science.
  • Manage turf renovation and establishment projects, from initial planning and soil preparation through to grow-in and final maturation.
