We are actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Gravel Loader / Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. In this crucial role, you will be the backbone of our material handling operations, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a front-end loader within a fast-paced quarry, pit, or construction yard environment. The ideal candidate is a proactive, safety-conscious professional with a keen eye for detail and a proven track record of productivity. You will be integral to the efficiency of our site, ensuring that materials are loaded correctly, stockpiles are managed effectively, and our customers and production plants receive the materials they need in a timely manner.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and proficiently operate a large front-end wheel loader to move, load, and transport loose aggregate materials such as gravel, sand, crushed stone, and dirt.
  • Accurately load customer trucks, haul trucks, and rail cars with specified materials, ensuring proper weight distribution and strict adherence to legal load limits.
  • Conduct thorough pre-operational and post-operational safety checks on the loader, meticulously inspecting fluid levels, tires, lights, hydraulic systems, and other critical components.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including the cab of the loader and the immediate loading area, to prevent accidents and hazards.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with truck drivers, plant personnel, and supervisors using hand signals and two-way radios to coordinate loading activities and manage traffic flow.
  • Expertly manage and maintain various stockpiles of aggregate materials, ensuring proper separation to prevent cross-contamination and to facilitate efficient loading.
  • Operate the loader to feed materials into hoppers, crushers, and screening plants to support a continuous and efficient production cycle.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company, MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) safety regulations and policies without exception.
  • Skillfully maneuver heavy equipment in confined spaces, on uneven terrain, and around other machinery and personnel, demonstrating exceptional spatial awareness and machine control.
  • Meticulously document daily activities, including equipment inspection logs, production quantities, hours of operation, and any maintenance or safety issues encountered.
    t- Continuously monitor the condition of the equipment during operation, listening for unusual noises and watching for performance changes that could indicate a mechanical failure.
  • Assist in routine and preventative maintenance of the loader, such as greasing fittings, checking and changing filters, and supporting mechanics during more complex repairs.
  • Operate other types of heavy equipment as needed and assigned, such as dozers, skid steers, or haul trucks, to support diverse operational requirements.
  • Ensure the quality of the material being loaded by visually inspecting for foreign debris, incorrect sizing, or contamination, and reporting any discrepancies to a supervisor.
  • Foster a strong culture of safety by actively participating in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and hazard identification programs, promoting safe work practices among all team members.
  • Utilize the loader's bucket and other attachments to perform general site maintenance, including cleaning up material spills, clearing and grading roadways, and managing drainage.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide essential support during plant shutdowns for maintenance and repair activities, assisting with cleanup, parts handling, and other assigned tasks.
  • Operate a water truck or other dust suppression systems as required to control airborne dust in the yard, on haul roads, and around the processing plant.
  • Assist ground personnel and other team members with various manual labor tasks as needed to meet production goals and maintain a safe site.
    t- Guide and direct truck traffic within the plant or quarry to ensure a safe, orderly, and efficient flow of vehicles entering and exiting the loading zones.
  • Participate in ongoing company-provided training programs to enhance equipment operation skills, learn new techniques, and stay current with safety best practices.
  • Monitor inventory levels of different material stockpiles and report low levels to the plant supervisor to help inform production and sales decisions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Front-End Loader Operation: Proven expertise in operating large front-end loaders (e.g., CAT 980/988, Komatsu WA500/WA600, John Deere 844) in a production setting.
  • Heavy Equipment Maintenance: The ability to perform daily preventative maintenance, pre-trip/post-trip inspections, and identify and report mechanical issues.
  • Material Handling & Management: Deep understanding of techniques for loading, blending, and stockpiling various aggregate materials to prevent segregation and contamination.
    -MSHA/OSHA Compliance: Verifiable knowledge of and commitment to MSHA and/or OSHA safety standards specific to quarry, mining, and heavy construction environments.
  • Load Scaling & Management: Skill in accurately judging weight and volume to load trucks to their specified legal limits efficiently, minimizing the need for re-adjustment.
  • Radio Communication: Clear and professional use of two-way radio systems to coordinate actions with a diverse team.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate of completion from a recognized heavy equipment operator training program or vocational school.
  • MSHA Part 46 or Part 48 training certification.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Heavy Equipment Operation
  • Construction Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience operating a front-end loader or similar heavy construction machinery.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a high-volume quarry, sand and gravel pit, asphalt plant, or large-scale civil construction environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience working under MSHA regulations is a significant plus.
