At its core, the Gravel Loader Assistant is the right-hand person to the Heavy Equipment Operator and the eyes and ears on the ground in a fast-paced aggregate or construction materials yard. This role is fundamental to ensuring operational safety, efficiency, and accuracy. The Assistant serves as a critical communication link, directing the flow of customer and company vehicles, spotting for heavy machinery to prevent incidents, and performing essential yard maintenance. This isn't just about manual labor; it's about being a proactive guardian of site safety and a key player in the logistical chain that gets materials from our stockpiles to our customers.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist the primary Loader Operator in accurately loading customer trucks and trailers with various aggregate materials like gravel, sand, and stone.
  • Serve as a primary spotter for heavy equipment, using standardized hand signals and radio communication to guide operators safely around obstacles, personnel, and other vehicles.
  • Direct vehicle traffic within the yard to ensure a safe and orderly flow of commercial and residential customers, preventing congestion and potential accidents.
  • Verify customer tickets and orders to ensure the correct type and quantity of material is loaded, preventing costly errors and improving customer satisfaction.
  • Adhere strictly to all company, OSHA, and MSHA safety policies and procedures, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Perform routine cleanup and maintenance of the yard, including shoveling spilled materials back into stockpiles and operating equipment for dust control.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with truck drivers and customers, providing directions and answering basic questions about loading procedures and yard layout.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift inspections of the work area, identifying and mitigating potential hazards such as uneven ground, debris, or overhead obstructions.
  • Utilize a two-way radio to maintain constant communication with the scale house, plant operators, and other personnel on site.
  • Guide drivers onto and off of the truck scale, ensuring proper positioning for accurate weight measurements and logistical processing.
  • Operate small equipment such as skid steers, utility vehicles, or water trucks as needed for various site support and maintenance tasks.
  • Manage the staging area for trucks, ensuring they are positioned correctly and safely for loading operations to maximize efficiency.
  • Ensure that loaded trucks are tarped correctly and safely before they are permitted to leave the premises, in compliance with transportation regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Monitor stockpiles of aggregate materials, reporting low levels to the Yard Manager or Plant Operator to ensure consistent product availability.
  • Assist in performing basic, routine maintenance on the front-end loader and other equipment, such as checking fluid levels, greasing fittings, and cleaning filters.
  • Participate actively in daily safety meetings (toolbox talks) to discuss potential hazards and reinforce safe work practices for the day's tasks.
  • Visually inspect the quality of materials being loaded to identify any contamination or inconsistencies, and report findings to a supervisor.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the equipment cab, tools, and any associated support structures or buildings.
  • Assist with inventory control by helping with physical stockpile measurements and counts as directed by management.
  • Provide support during equipment breakdowns or maintenance periods, assisting mechanics by fetching tools, parts, and providing an extra set of hands.
  • Document and report any safety incidents, near-misses, or equipment malfunctions immediately according to established company protocols.
  • Operate a wheelbarrow and use hand tools like shovels, rakes, and brooms for manual material handling and detailed cleanup tasks.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Aggregate Material Knowledge: Understanding of the different types, sizes, and applications of sand, gravel, and stone.
  • Heavy Equipment Spotting: Proficiency in using standard hand signals to safely guide heavy machinery operators.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform routine checks (fluids, grease points, tire pressure) on equipment.
  • Small Equipment Operation: Competency in operating equipment like skid steers, utility vehicles, or water trucks.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in heavy equipment operation or a related construction trade.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in a relevant outdoor, industrial, or construction setting.

Preferred:

  • 1+ years of direct experience in a quarry, sand/gravel pit, landscaping supply yard, or similar environment is strongly preferred. Experience as a spotter or ground guide for heavy equipment is a significant asset.
