Key Responsibilities and Required Skills for a Gravel Plant Operator
💰 $20 - $35 per hour, dependent on experience and location
🎯 Role Definition
A Gravel Plant Operator is the hands-on expert at the heart of the aggregate production industry. This role is fundamental to transforming raw rock and sand into the specific, high-quality materials required for construction projects of all sizes, from building roads and bridges to creating foundations for buildings. You are not just running a machine; you are the conductor of an industrial orchestra of crushers, screens, and conveyors. Success in this position means ensuring the entire plant runs safely, efficiently, and produces materials that meet precise quality standards. This is a dynamic role that blends mechanical skill, operational oversight, and a strong commitment to safety.

- Safely operate various types of heavy mobile equipment, such as front-end loaders and haul trucks, to feed raw material into the plant and manage finished product stockpiles.
- Adjust crusher settings, screen configurations, and water flow to produce aggregates that meet specific customer and engineering specifications.
- Act as the first line of defense in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving operational, mechanical, or electrical malfunctions to minimize plant downtime.
- Perform necessary repairs on plant equipment, which may involve welding, cutting with a torch, and basic fabrication to fix or replace worn components.
- Meticulously collect material samples at various production stages for quality control testing, ensuring all products meet required gradation and quality standards.
- Maintain a deep understanding of and strict adherence to all MSHA, OSHA, and environmental safety regulations to foster a culture of safety on site.
- Expertly manage material stockpiles to prevent contamination and segregation, ensuring accurate inventory levels and proper product rotation.
- Execute proper Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures on all equipment before performing any maintenance or repair activities to ensure personal and team safety.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain clear, accurate, and timely records, including daily production reports, maintenance logs, inspection forms, and safety documentation.
- Effectively communicate with the plant manager, sales team, and truck drivers to coordinate production schedules with customer demand and shipping logistics.
- Assist in the assembly, teardown, and relocation of portable crushing and screening plants between different job sites.
- Play an active role in training and mentoring new operators and ground personnel on safe and efficient plant operation procedures.
- Contribute to a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment in and around the control room, plant structures, and stockpile areas.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to plant system alarms, diagnosing the root cause and taking immediate corrective action.
- Recommend process improvements and equipment modifications to enhance plant safety, product quality, and overall efficiency.
- Participate actively in daily toolbox talks and scheduled safety meetings to reinforce best practices and discuss potential hazards.
