Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor greenhouse climate control systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, shading) to maintain target temperature, humidity, CO2 and light levels; adjust setpoints and actuators and log changes to maximize plant health and energy efficiency.
  • Manage and run irrigation and fertigation systems, program dosing pumps and injectors, calibrate chemical/equipment flow rates, and maintain accurate records of water and nutrient applications for traceability and quality control.
  • Set up, operate and troubleshoot conveyors, potting machines, seeders, transplanters, and other automated production equipment; perform minor mechanical adjustments and report complex faults to maintenance.
  • Conduct daily inspections of equipment (pumps, filters, fans, boilers, heaters, chillers, sensors, valves, belts) and perform preventive maintenance tasks including filter replacement, lubrication, belt tensioning and sensor cleaning to prevent downtime.
  • Monitor and validate environmental sensors and control system data (temperature probes, humidity sensors, EC/TDS meters, flow meters); perform routine calibration and ensure accurate data logging for production records and audits.
  • Execute safe handling, storage and mixing of fertilizers, plant protection products and other agrochemicals; follow label instructions, safety data sheets (SDS), and company pesticide application procedures.
  • Operate and maintain HVAC and refrigeration units within greenhouse complexes, coordinate with external HVAC technicians for major repairs, and support energy management initiatives to reduce utility costs.
  • Load, unload and move trays, potted plants, substrate, and bulk materials using forklifts, electric pallet jacks, or hand-trucks while following safe material-handling procedures and maintaining inventory accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot automation and PLC-controlled equipment: diagnose faults, reset controllers, replace fuses/relays, and communicate recurring issues to automation engineers for software or hardware updates.
  • Follow integrated pest management (IPM) protocols by operating foggers, misting systems, and biological control release equipment; assist scouting teams by providing environmental and production data relevant to pest pressure.
  • Maintain and operate seed germination chambers, propagation benches, and misting/ebb-and-flow systems; adjust cycles and parameters to maximize germination and rooting success rates.
  • Record and report daily production activities, equipment logs, environmental readings, and corrective actions in digital systems or paper logs to support traceability, quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Support transplant and potting operations by programming automated pot-fillers and ensuring substrate moisture targets; coordinate timing to align with production schedules.
  • Implement sanitation and biosecurity measures for equipment and work areas: clean benches, sterilize tools, and manage waste disposal to reduce disease risk and comply with regulatory and company standards.
  • Perform seasonal startup and shutdown procedures for greenhouse systems (spring commissioning, winterization) including flushing lines, winter heating tests, and valve inspections to ensure readiness and prevent freeze damage.
  • Assist with energy conservation and sustainability projects such as retrofitting lighting to LEDs, installing shade systems, and optimizing ventilation schedules to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs.
  • Coordinate with production planners and horticultural staff to sequence equipment usage, prioritize repairs, and minimize production disruption during maintenance or changeovers.
  • Train and mentor junior operators and temporary staff on safe operation of equipment, emergency shutdown procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain consistent production practices.
  • Execute emergency response actions for equipment failures, water leaks, chemical spills, or HVAC malfunctions: isolate systems, initiate containment, notify supervisors and document incident and corrective steps.
  • Maintain parts inventory and recommend spare-parts stocking levels for critical equipment (pumps, seals, belts, sensors) to reduce mean time to repair and support continuous production.
  • Interface with vendors and service contractors to schedule preventive maintenance, obtain service quotes, and coordinate warranty repairs while ensuring minimal disruption to production.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: recommend process improvements, propose automation upgrades, and track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as uptime, yield impact and resource usage.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, local environmental and agricultural regulations, and company safety programs; conduct routine safety checks and participate in safety meetings and trainings.
  • Perform periodic quality checks (plant size, bloom counts, substrate moisture, EC/pH) and provide feedback to production managers to support crop uniformity and market specification adherence.

  • Support greenhouse data collection efforts by entering environmental and production metrics into farm management software, spreadsheets, or cloud-based systems.
  • Assist in cross-functional projects such as packaging line improvements, harvest scheduling, or new variety trials by providing equipment and technical insights.
  • Contribute to root-cause analysis for recurring equipment issues and help implement corrective action plans that reduce downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Coordinate with procurement on replacement parts, consumables and equipment upgrades; verify deliveries and update inventory records.
  • Help maintain facility cleanliness and order, including greenhouse gutters, service corridors, and utility rooms to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with inspections.
  • Support occasional night or weekend shifts during high-production periods, seasonal peaks, or emergency repairs as required.
  • Participate in onboarding and skills development sessions for seasonal workers, focusing on safe equipment handling and basic troubleshooting.
  • Assist in basic electrical and plumbing repairs under supervision by following lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safety permits.
  • Provide input on budget needs for capital equipment replacements and forecast spare parts consumption for upcoming production cycles.
  • Maintain and file equipment manuals, SOPs and safety documentation accessible to staff and auditors.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Operation and troubleshooting of greenhouse environmental control systems (Priva, Argus, Hortimax, climate computers).
  • Irrigation and fertigation system management, including pump operation, dosing controllers and EC/pH calibration.
  • Experience with HVAC, boilers, chillers, fans and ventilation systems specific to greenhouse environments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:
Associate degree or technical certificate in Horticulture, Agricultural Technology, Plant Science, Mechanical/Electrical Technology, or related field.
