Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Monitor and meticulously adjust environmental control systems (e.g., Priva, Argus, Hoogendoorn) to maintain optimal temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, and light intensity for various plant species.
- Execute daily irrigation schedules for all crops, employing various methods such as drip, ebb and flow, boom, or manual watering, and adjust based on plant needs and weather conditions.
- Prepare and apply precise nutrient solutions and fertilizers (fertigation) according to established feeding programs, ensuring proper pH and EC levels for healthy plant growth.
- Actively scout crops for early signs of pests, diseases, and nutritional deficiencies, and accurately report findings to the Head Grower or IPM Manager.
- Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including the release of beneficial insects, setting up traps, and applying biological or chemical controls as directed and in a safe manner.
- Perform a variety of propagation tasks, including sowing seeds, sticking cuttings, dividing plants, and assisting with grafting, to generate new plant stock.
- Execute plant maintenance activities such as pruning, de-leafing, thinning, spacing, and trellising to promote air circulation, light penetration, and optimal plant structure.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on greenhouse equipment, including irrigation systems, foggers, carts, conveyors, and automated potting machines.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of daily activities, including irrigation, fertilization, pest/disease observations, and chemical applications, using logs or software systems.
- Participate in the harvesting, grading, and packing of produce, flowers, or other plant products, ensuring they meet strict quality standards.
- Manage bench and floor space efficiently, organizing and moving plants as they progress through different growth stages to optimize greenhouse capacity.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including sanitizing benches, tools, and walkways to prevent the spread of pathogens and ensure a safe workplace.
- Calibrate and troubleshoot sensors and probes for environmental control systems, ensuring accurate data collection for temperature, pH, and EC.
- Assist in mixing soils and growing media to specific formulations required for different crops and propagation stages.
- Support research and trial initiatives by meticulously following experimental protocols, collecting data, and recording observations on plant responses.
- Ensure all activities comply with company policies, industry best practices, and governmental regulations, particularly regarding pesticide application (WPS) and workplace safety.
- Operate forklifts, tractors, or other light machinery to move materials, supplies, and finished products within the greenhouse facility.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding crop status, equipment issues, and resource needs to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Assist in managing inventory of growing supplies such as pots, trays, soil, fertilizers, and chemicals, and report when stock levels are low.
- Contribute to seasonal transitions within the greenhouse, including comprehensive clean-outs, disinfection procedures, and setup for new crop cycles.
- Adhere to and champion all safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during specific tasks like spraying or handling chemicals.
- Provide support for the installation and repair of greenhouse structures and systems, such as replacing poly coverings or fixing irrigation lines.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in training new team members or temporary staff on basic greenhouse tasks and safety procedures.
- Contribute to process improvement discussions, suggesting more efficient ways to complete tasks or improve crop quality.
- Participate in inventory counts of plants and hard goods.
- Support shipping and receiving operations by helping load and unload trucks with plant materials and supplies.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
