Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough first-article, in-process, and final inspections of greeting cards and related stationery products to ensure they meet all quality standards.
  • Meticulously verify print quality, checking for color accuracy against approved proofs and PMS color guides, registration, clarity, and consistency across the production run.
  • Inspect for any printing defects such as smudging, ghosting, streaking, hickeys, or misprints, and flag affected batches for correction.
  • Examine the physical integrity of each card, ensuring precise die-cutting, scoring, and folding, and confirming there are no tears, dents, or imperfections.
  • Scrutinize special finishing applications, including foil stamping, embossing, debossing, glitter, and flocking, for proper application, alignment, and adhesion.
  • Perform rigorous checks on all text and copy, proofreading for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors to guarantee content accuracy.
  • Verify that the correct card is paired with the correct envelope, checking for color, size, and style matching as per the job specifications.
  • Evaluate the quality of raw materials, including paper stock and envelopes, upon receipt to ensure they meet our procurement standards before entering production.
  • Accurately document inspection results, record defect data, and maintain detailed logs and reports using our Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Clearly communicate quality issues and defect trends to the Production Supervisor and relevant machine operators in a timely and constructive manner.
  • Isolate, tag, and manage non-conforming products according to established procedures to prevent their accidental shipment.
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations to help identify the source of quality defects and contribute to developing effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Utilize inspection tools such as magnifying glasses, loupes, densitometers, and rulers to perform detailed assessments of product quality.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe and efficient inspection environment.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of quality control checklists, inspection criteria, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform randomized audits of finished, packaged goods to ensure packaging integrity and accurate labeling before they are moved to shipping.
  • Collaborate with the design and pre-press teams to provide feedback on manufacturability and potential quality risks associated with new designs.
  • Monitor the production environment for factors that could impact quality, such as humidity or dust, and report any concerns.
  • Train new team members on quality standards, inspection techniques, and proper documentation procedures.
  • Ensure that all products comply with internal specifications as well as any relevant industry or regulatory standards.
  • Manage and maintain a physical library of approved "gold standard" samples for each product to use as a benchmark during inspections.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep understanding of printing processes (e.g., offset, digital, letterpress) and common print defects.
  • Proficiency with color theory and experience using color matching systems, specifically the Pantone Matching System (PMS).
  • Experience using basic inspection and measurement tools such as a print loupe, ruler, and caliper.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and meticulously follow detailed work orders, technical specifications, and quality checklists.
  • Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel for data tracking) and experience with Quality Management Software (QMS).
  • Knowledge of quality assurance principles and sampling methodologies (e.g., AQL - Acceptable Quality Limit).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Prior experience inspecting products with fine aesthetic details and special finishes is a significant plus.
