Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of finishing equipment, such as die-cutters, foil stampers, embossers, folders, and gluers, according to specific job ticket instructions.
  • Interpret complex work orders, setup sheets, and design specifications to ensure machine settings are precisely adjusted for each unique greeting card run.
  • Conduct initial test runs of new jobs, meticulously inspecting the first-off articles for accuracy in color, cut, fold, and placement of embellishments before proceeding with full production.
  • Continuously monitor machine operations to detect any malfunctions, such as paper jams, misfeeds, or deviations in quality, and make immediate adjustments to prevent waste.
  • Perform rigorous and consistent in-process quality control checks, visually inspecting cards for defects like smudges, incorrect registration, or tears throughout the production run.
  • Accurately load raw materials, including large sheets of cardstock, foil rolls, and adhesive, onto the machinery, ensuring proper alignment and tension.
  • Unload finished or semi-finished products from the machine, carefully stacking, jogging, and packing them to protect quality and prepare them for the next production stage.
  • Make fine-tuned adjustments to machine components, including rollers, blades, and guides, to maintain consistent quality and high-speed output.
  • Take responsibility for meeting daily and weekly production targets and efficiency goals while upholding the highest standards of quality.
  • Read and understand measurements on a ruler to 1/32 of an inch to ensure all cuts and folds are perfectly aligned with the job specifications.
  • Manage the sequence of production runs to optimize machine uptime and minimize changeover time between different card designs.
  • Ensure the final product is neatly packed in cartons, correctly labeled with job numbers and quantities, and staged for the shipping department.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing minor parts to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Assist maintenance technicians with more complex repairs and troubleshooting by providing detailed information about machine performance issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around the machinery, adhering to all company safety protocols and 5S principles.
  • Accurately complete all required production paperwork and enter data into the manufacturing execution system (MES) to track output, waste, and downtime.
  • Communicate effectively with shift supervisors, quality assurance personnel, and other operators to report on production status and resolve any issues.
  • Participate in team meetings and continuous improvement initiatives, offering suggestions on how to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Manage and stage supplies for your work area, ensuring you have enough cardstock, boxes, and other materials to complete your shift's scheduled work without interruption.
  • Cross-train on other machinery and in other departments as needed to support the overall flexibility and capability of the production team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Machine Operation: Proven ability to operate and troubleshoot industrial manufacturing equipment, preferably in printing, bindery, or packaging.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of how mechanical systems work, with the ability to perform setups, adjustments, and minor maintenance.
  • Quality Control Inspection: The ability to spot small defects and inconsistencies in color, print, and cutting using visual inspection and basic measurement tools.
  • Basic Mathematics: Proficiency in performing calculations involving fractions and decimals for measurements and production counts.
  • Die-Cutting & Finishing: Specific experience with die-cutting, foil stamping, embossing, folding, or gluing processes is highly desirable.
  • Reading Technical Documents: Skill in interpreting work orders, blueprints, and equipment manuals.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience as a machine operator in a manufacturing, printing, or packaging environment.

Preferred: Direct experience operating finishing equipment such as Bobst, Heidelberg, Kluge, or similar die-cutting, folding, and gluing machinery.
