Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Independently travel to client sites to diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform complex repairs on a diverse range of commercial grilling equipment, including charbroilers, flat-top griddles, salamanders, and smokers.
  • Execute a comprehensive preventative maintenance program on all scheduled equipment, including cleaning, calibrating, and replacing worn components to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Meticulously install new commercial grilling systems, ensuring proper connection to gas lines, electrical supplies, and ventilation systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and local codes.
  • Read, interpret, and apply technical information from complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service manuals to facilitate accurate diagnostics and repairs.
  • Calibrate thermostats, gas valves, and electronic control systems to ensure precise temperature management and consistent cooking performance for our clients.
  • Expertly replace defective or worn components such as burners, ignitors, pilot assemblies, thermocouples, gas regulators, motors, and control boards.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate electronic log of all service activities, including diagnostics performed, repairs completed, hours logged, and parts utilized for each service call.
  • Manage and maintain a well-organized inventory of spare parts, tools, and materials within a company-provided service vehicle to ensure readiness for a wide range of repair scenarios.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service by clearly communicating diagnoses, explaining repair options and costs, and providing realistic timelines for completion to on-site management.
  • Ensure all repairs and installations strictly adhere to local, state, and federal safety codes, including gas fitting regulations and electrical standards.
  • Conduct thorough safety inspections on gas lines and electrical connections associated with grilling equipment, identifying and rectifying potential hazards.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergency, on-call service requests, which may occur outside of standard business hours, to support critical client needs.
  • Systematically test all equipment functions post-repair to verify that the initial issue is fully resolved and the unit is operating safely and to manufacturer specifications.
  • Order necessary repair parts and supplies from approved vendors, tracking orders to ensure timely delivery and completion of service jobs.
  • Utilize a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized diagnostic equipment, such as multimeters, manometers, and gas leak detectors, with high proficiency.
  • Disassemble and reassemble complex grill units and related systems to perform deep cleaning, access internal components, or execute major overhauls.
  • Address and resolve issues with associated kitchen systems, including ventilation hoods and fire suppression interlocks connected to grilling stations.
  • Prepare clear, detailed, and professional service reports and work orders for client signature and internal billing processes.
  • Proactively stay current with the latest industry technologies, manufacturer training updates, and evolving safety protocols for commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Safely handle, transport, and connect compressed gas cylinders (e.g., propane) and work with natural gas supply lines in a commercial environment.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-site training to kitchen staff on the proper daily operation, cleaning procedures, and basic troubleshooting for grilling equipment to prevent future service calls.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for equipment upgrades or replacements to clients when a unit is beyond economical repair, supporting business development.
  • Collaborate with the dispatch and parts departments to optimize service scheduling, routing, and parts availability for first-time fix success.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment, both in the service vehicle and at the client's premises, leaving the work area cleaner than it was found.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Mechanical & Electrical Aptitude: Proven ability to diagnose and repair both mechanical and electrical systems within commercial appliances.
  • Gas Equipment Expertise: In-depth knowledge of natural gas and propane systems, including piping, regulators, valves, and combustion principles.
    -Schematic & Diagram Interpretation: High proficiency in reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical blueprints.
  • Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of multimeters, manometers, combustion analyzers, and gas leak detectors.
  • CFESA Certification: Certified Foodservice Equipment Service Association (CFESA) certification is highly desirable.
  • EPA Universal Certification: Required for technicians who may also work on refrigerated equipment stands or chef bases.
  • Plumbing & Pipe Fitting: Basic knowledge of plumbing and gas pipe fitting techniques and relevant codes.
  • Welding/Fabrication: Basic welding and metal fabrication skills for minor, on-the-spot repairs are a plus.
  • Valid Driver's License: A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory for operating a service vehicle.
  • Tech Savvy: Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and field service management software for scheduling, reporting, and parts look-up.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of direct, hands-on experience.

  • Prior experience specifically as a Commercial Kitchen Equipment Technician or Field Service Technician working on gas and electric cooking appliances. Experience in a restaurant, hotel, or institutional maintenance role is highly valued.
