Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, inspect, and verify incoming freight and vendor deliveries, checking invoices and purchase orders to confirm quantities, item descriptions, and product condition before timely and accurate stocking to sales floor and backroom.
  • Execute efficient shelf replenishment, rotate stock using FIFO (first-in, first-out), and remove or tag expired, damaged, or recalled items to ensure food safety compliance and reduce shrink.
  • Build attractive, sales-driving merchandising displays and adhere to planogram and promotional signage guidelines, changing layouts for weekly promotions, seasonal items, and store directives.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems to process customer purchases, returns, price adjustments, coupons and loyalty transactions while accurately reconciling cash drawers and preparing deposits.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by greeting customers, answering product and location questions, assisting with special orders, and resolving complaints or coordinating escalations to management.
  • Maintain strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and allergen handling procedures, including temperature monitoring for refrigeration/freezer units and applying ServSafe or equivalent standards.
  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitation tasks in assigned departments — including sweeping, shelving, cleaning display cases and refrigeration units — to meet health code and corporate cleanliness standards.
  • Conduct regular shelf and backroom cycle counts and full inventory audits, using handheld scanners and inventory software to identify discrepancies and drive corrective actions.
  • Price, label, and tag products accurately, update signage for promotions and markdowns, and ensure shelf-edge accuracy to maintain pricing integrity and enhance shopper trust.
  • Assist with special orders, online order fulfillment, curbside pickup and delivery coordination, including efficient picking, bagging and staging of customer orders.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise department team members and seasonal associates on standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and merchandising expectations to maintain consistent service levels.
  • Follow loss prevention protocols, monitor for potential theft or shrink, perform bag checks when required, and escalate suspicious activity according to store policy.
  • Use pallet jacks, hand trucks, and other material handling equipment safely to move heavy cases and pallets from receiving to designated storage or display areas.
  • Monitor and adjust product facings, stock depth and planogram compliance to optimize shelf availability, impulse purchases, and overall category performance.
  • Coordinate with category managers and suppliers to place replenishment orders, manage out-of-stock situations, and communicate product irregularities or vendor issues.
  • Prepare and package deli, prepared foods, bakery, or produce items per recipe and portion control standards (if assigned), ensuring freshness and accurate labeling of weights and prices.
  • Execute markdowns, transfers, and product disposals in accordance with store policy, documenting reasons for loss and suggesting corrective measures to reduce recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate logs for temperature checks, equipment maintenance requests, and cleaning schedules; proactively report maintenance issues to facilities or management.
  • Support morning and evening store opening/closing procedures including securing the store, verifying alarms, reconciling cash, restocking essential items and ensuring the sales floor is presentation-ready.
  • Assist with promotional event setup and teardown, including seasonal displays, sampling events, and in-store demos to maximize customer engagement and sales.
  • Communicate daily with store leadership regarding inventory levels, customer feedback, staffing needs, and opportunities to improve operational efficiencies or increase sales.
  • Ensure compliance with local and federal regulations including food labeling, weight and measure standards, and workplace safety requirements such as OSHA guidelines.
  • Manage supplier returns, credits, and discrepancies by documenting damaged goods and coordinating with vendor reps or procurement to resolve issues and recover costs.
  • Support loss-control initiatives by maintaining organized storage areas, minimizing overstock in vulnerable zones, and participating in scheduled shrink reduction programs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with ad hoc reporting to store management on inventory turns, shrink trends and top-selling items to inform ordering and promotional strategies.
  • Contribute ideas to merchandising plans and product assortment based on customer behavior and sales performance.
  • Participate in cross-functional store projects such as seasonal resets, remodels, or technology rollouts (new POS or inventory tablets).
  • Cover other store departments as needed during peak periods or staffing shortages, maintaining flexibility across deli, produce, bakery and front-end functions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of Point-of-Sale (POS) systems and cash handling procedures, including reconciliation and basic till troubleshooting.
  • Inventory management and cycle counting experience, comfortable with handheld scanners and inventory software (e.g., WMS, Oracle Retail, or store-specific systems).
  • Strong merchandising skills: planogram execution, promotional setup, signage creation and price tagging.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards; ServSafe or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience with receiving and dock operations, including unloading trucks, verifying invoices, and using pallet jacks or hand trucks safely.
  • Basic math and pricing skills for accurate tagging, markdowns and cash balancing.
  • Familiarity with loss prevention practices and shrink reduction techniques.
  • Competence in measuring and recording product temperatures and handling perishable goods to maintain safety and quality.
  • Ability to use email and basic productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Workspace) to communicate and document issues.
  • Experience fulfilling online grocery orders, including picking, packing, labeling and coordinating pickups or deliveries.
  • Basic understanding of merchandising analytics, category performance indicators, and how shelf placement affects sales.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
