Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Skillfully and efficiently bag customer groceries, ensuring proper weight distribution and the logical separation of items like raw meats, fresh produce, chemicals, and fragile goods.
  • Select the appropriate bag type (paper, plastic, reusable) based on customer preference, store policy, and the volume and weight of the items being purchased.
  • Handle delicate and fragile items, such as eggs, bread, chips, and glass containers, with exceptional care to prevent breakage, crushing, and any other damage.
  • Proactively and politely ask customers for their bagging preferences, such as "paper or plastic?", double-bagging for heavy items, or how they would like their personal reusable bags packed.
  • Assist customers by loading their groceries from the shopping cart onto the checkout counter conveyor belt to help expedite the checkout process during peak times.
  • Offer and provide carry-out assistance, which involves accompanying the customer and safely loading bagged groceries into their vehicle in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and fully-stocked bagging station, including wiping down surfaces, removing debris, and ensuring a constant and ready supply of various bag types.
  • Efficiently and safely retrieve shopping carts from the parking lot, surrounding areas, and cart corrals, ensuring a consistent and adequate supply is available for incoming customers.
  • Organize and nest retrieved carts neatly into the designated interior and exterior cart storage areas, maintaining clear and safe pathways for both pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Perform price checks for the cashier by quickly locating an item on the sales floor when a price fails to scan or appears incorrect, minimizing customer delay.
  • Respond promptly to cashier requests for assistance with large, heavy, or awkwardly shaped items that need to be scanned in the cart or require a team lift.
  • Monitor the checkout area and store entrance for potential safety hazards, such as spills, broken glass, or debris, and take immediate action to clean them up or report them to management.
  • Greet customers warmly as they enter the checkout lane and provide a sincere "thank you" for their patronage as they conclude their transaction.
  • Assist in the process of returning unwanted merchandise ("go-backs" or "returns") to their correct shelf locations throughout the store in a timely manner.
  • Proactively replace and restock bag supplies and receipt paper rolls at all checkout stations throughout a shift to ensure cashiers are well-equipped to serve customers without interruption.
  • Stay knowledgeable about weekly specials, store promotions, and the general layout of the store to accurately and helpfully answer basic customer questions.
  • Communicate effectively with cashiers and front-end supervisors to ensure a smooth and continuous flow of customers through the checkout lines, anticipating needs and preventing bottlenecks.
  • Manage, sort, and process returned bottles and cans in the designated recycling area, adhering to all store and state-specific sanitation and handling guidelines.
  • Support store cleanliness by performing sweeping and mopping duties in the front-end area, entrance/exit, and other parts of the store as directed by a supervisor.
  • Observe customer traffic patterns and proactively help manage lines by calling for additional cashiers or opening a new checkout lane to reduce customer wait times.
  • Provide friendly and helpful directions to customers looking for specific products, departments, or in-store facilities like restrooms.
  • Adhere to all company policies, safety protocols, and loss prevention procedures to contribute to a secure and professional shopping and working environment.

Secondary Functions

  • Assisting in other departments, like produce or dairy, with basic stocking, rotating, or "facing" of products during non-peak hours.
  • Participating in store-wide cleaning tasks, such as cleaning restrooms or break rooms, as part of a rotational duty roster.
