Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely guide and marshal aircraft during arrival and departure, using internationally recognized hand signals to communicate with the flight crew.
  • Operate a variety of Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including baggage tugs, belt loaders, pushback tractors, and air start units, in close proximity to aircraft.
  • Meticulously load and unload passenger luggage, air cargo, and mail from aircraft holds, ensuring proper weight distribution according to the load plan.
  • Securely stack and organize baggage and cargo in the aircraft belly to prevent shifting during flight and to facilitate efficient unloading at the destination.
  • Perform pushback and towing procedures to move aircraft between the gate, remote parking stands, and maintenance areas.
  • Conduct aircraft de-icing and anti-icing procedures during inclement weather, ensuring critical surfaces are free of contamination before takeoff.
  • Service aircraft lavatories and replenish potable water supplies, adhering to strict health and sanitation protocols.
  • Connect and disconnect ground power units (GPU) and pre-conditioned air (PCA) hoses to the aircraft for onboard power and climate control.
  • Place and remove chocks, safety cones, and protective barriers around the aircraft upon arrival and before departure to ensure a safe operational zone.
  • Perform visual walk-around inspections of the aircraft upon arrival to identify any visible damage or anomalies and report them to the supervisor.
  • Sort and route incoming baggage to connecting flights or baggage claim carousels with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Handle and transport specialized cargo, including live animals, dangerous goods, and high-value shipments, following all specific handling procedures.
  • Maintain constant communication with the flight crew, gate agents, and operations control center via two-way radio.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the ramp area, GSE, and baggage staging zones to prevent foreign object debris (FOD) hazards.
  • Adhere rigorously to all airline, airport, and federal safety regulations, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate actively in pre-shift safety briefings and team meetings to stay informed about daily operational changes and safety alerts.
  • Assist with the transfer of passengers with reduced mobility, including operating specialized lifting equipment when required.
  • Document and log all services performed on an aircraft using paper forms or handheld digital devices.
  • Respond promptly to and assist in the event of an emergency, such as a fuel spill or equipment malfunction, following established protocols.
  • Operate passenger boarding stairs or jet bridges, ensuring a safe and secure connection to the aircraft door.
  • Provide support for VIP and private aircraft handling, often requiring a higher level of discretion and customer service.

  • Perform routine pre-use inspections and minor preventative maintenance on Ground Support Equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Contribute to maintaining a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) free environment by conducting regular sweeps of the ramp and operational areas.
  • Assist with light cabin cleaning, restocking of in-flight supplies, or security searches as directed by the airline.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to maintain and enhance technical skills and safety knowledge.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Operation: Proficiency in operating equipment like belt loaders, pushback tractors, and baggage carts.
  • Aircraft Marshalling: Knowledge of standard IATA hand signals for directing aircraft.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years. This is generally an entry-level position with comprehensive on-the-job training provided.
