Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the precise marshalling of aircraft during arrival and departure, using standardized hand signals to guide pilots safely to and from the gate.
  • Operate a variety of heavy Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including baggage tugs, belt loaders, pushback tractors, and container loaders, in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Skillfully and carefully load, unload, and sort passenger baggage, air cargo, and company mail, ensuring items are handled without damage and directed to the correct destination.
  • Perform aircraft pushback and towing procedures, connecting and disconnecting the tow bar and communicating effectively with the flight deck crew.
  • Conduct aircraft de-icing and anti-icing operations during inclement weather, applying fluids according to specific procedural and environmental guidelines to ensure flight safety.
  • Service aircraft lavatories and potable water systems, following strict sanitation protocols to maintain hygiene and system functionality.
  • Position and operate passenger-loading bridges or mobile air stairs to ensure a safe and accessible boarding and deplaning process for all passengers.
  • Connect and disconnect ground power units (GPU) and pre-conditioned air (PCA) units to the aircraft to provide power and climate control while at the gate.
  • Perform comprehensive walk-around safety checks of the aircraft and surrounding work area to identify and mitigate any potential hazards before, during, and after servicing.
  • Adhere meticulously to all federal, airport, and airline safety regulations, including those set forth by the FAA and TSA, to maintain a secure operating environment.
  • Communicate critical information and operational updates clearly with the flight crew, gate agents, and fellow ground team members via two-way radio or in-person briefings.
  • Arrange and position safety cones, chocks, and other required equipment around the aircraft to secure it upon arrival and prepare it for departure.
  • Ensure the accurate weight and balance of the aircraft by following detailed loading instructions and manifests, documenting any discrepancies immediately.
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to irregular operations, such as flight delays, cancellations, or gate changes, adapting tasks and priorities as needed.
  • Maintain constant situational awareness on the active ramp to prevent collisions between aircraft, vehicles, equipment, and personnel.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct pre-use operational checks on all Ground Support Equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition, reporting any defects or maintenance needs to supervisors.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the ramp area, break rooms, and equipment storage locations to promote safety and operational efficiency.
  • Assist passengers with special needs, including the handling of mobility aids and ensuring they receive appropriate assistance during boarding and deplaning.
  • Complete required paperwork and digital documentation related to flight handling, baggage counts, and equipment usage with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Participate actively in mandatory safety briefings, team meetings, and ongoing training sessions to stay current with procedures and best practices.
  • Support inventory management of ground handling supplies, such as de-icing fluid, chocks, and safety wands.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to new team members, sharing knowledge and reinforcing a culture of safety and teamwork.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GSE Operation: Proficiency in operating various types of ground support equipment, including pushback tugs, belt loaders, and lavatory/water service carts.
  • Aircraft Marshalling: Knowledge of and ability to execute IATA standard aircraft marshalling hand signals for directing aircraft.
  • Radio Communication: Clear and concise communication skills using two-way radio systems with proper aviation phraseology.
  • Safety Compliance: Deep understanding of airport safety protocols, TSA security regulations, and FAA guidelines for ramp operations.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform pre-use inspections on equipment and identify potential maintenance issues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years. This is a common entry-level position in the aviation industry.

Preferred:
