Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of airside operational areas, including ramps, taxiways, and baggage handling facilities, to ensure a hazard-free environment.
  • Proactively identify, document, and track the mitigation of potential safety hazards related to aircraft ground handling, vehicle movement, and personnel activities.
  • Lead and document thorough investigations into all ground safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop effective corrective action plans.
  • Develop, implement, and continually refine ground safety policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and best practices in line with industry standards.
  • Ensure and enforce strict adherence to all local, national, and international aviation regulations, including those from the FAA, ICAO, IATA, and TSA.
  • Oversee and audit the performance of third-party vendors and ground handling partners to confirm their compliance with established safety protocols.
  • Champion the Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention program through regular inspections, awareness campaigns, and coordination of FOD walks.
  • Design and deliver engaging and effective ground safety training for all new and existing employees, covering topics from personal protective equipment (PPE) to safe driving practices.
  • Monitor and analyze safety data and performance metrics to identify negative trends, producing detailed reports and dashboards for senior leadership.
  • Act as the on-scene safety authority during irregular operations, emergencies, or aircraft incidents, providing guidance and ensuring protocols are followed.
  • Facilitate and lead regular safety meetings and briefings with frontline staff and department heads to foster open communication about safety concerns.
  • Perform risk assessments for new ground support equipment (GSE), operational procedures, or changes in the airside environment.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and corrective actions for auditing and review purposes.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies during safety audits and inspections, ensuring all documentation and responses are prepared and accurate.
  • Manage the inventory, inspection, and proper usage of all ground safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, spill kits, and first aid stations.
  • Promote a non-punitive reporting culture where employees feel empowered to report safety issues without fear of reprisal.
  • Review and provide safety-focused input on airport construction or maintenance projects that may impact ground operations.
  • Develop and execute emergency response drills and exercises to test and improve the organization's preparedness for various ground-based scenarios.
  • Stay current with evolving aviation safety trends, technologies, and regulatory changes to ensure the organization's safety program remains state-of-the-art.
  • Collaborate closely with airline partners, air traffic control, and other airport stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach to airside safety.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the development and delivery of safety-related communications and awareness campaigns across the organization.
  • Participate actively in cross-departmental safety committees and project teams to promote a unified and holistic safety culture.
  • Support the broader Safety department with data analysis, trend identification, and the preparation of key performance indicator (KPI) reports.
  • Act as a subject matter expert during the procurement process for new Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to ensure it meets all safety standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In-depth knowledge of aviation regulations and standards (FAA Part 139, ICAO Annexes, IATA Ground Operations Manual - IGOM).
  • Expertise in Safety Management Systems (SMS) principles and practical application.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation methodologies and root cause analysis techniques (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, SCAT).
  • Comprehensive understanding of aircraft ground handling procedures, including pushback, towing, servicing, and fueling.
  • Strong knowledge of airside operations, vehicle control, and ramp safety protocols.
  • Experience conducting formal safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention and management programs.
  • Competency in using incident reporting and safety management software platforms.
  • Knowledge of emergency response planning and crisis management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for creating detailed reports, analyses, and training presentations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, combined with significant, directly relevant work experience in an aviation environment.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Aviation Management
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Safety Engineering or a closely related discipline

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an aviation operations role, such as ground handling, ramp services, or airport operations, with at least 1-2 years in a capacity with direct safety responsibilities.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a major hub airport environment or for a large airline carrier.
  • Professional safety certifications (e.g., ASP, CSP, or aviation-specific credentials) are highly desirable.
  • Prior experience as a safety trainer or auditor is a significant plus.
