Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Oversee and coordinate day-to-day nursing operations across assigned wards or specialty units, ensuring consistent, high-quality patient care and adherence to clinical standards and protocols.

- Oversee medication management practices, including controlled drug governance, reconciliation at admission/discharge, and monitoring adherence to prescribing and administration policies.
- Conduct regular clinical audits, evaluate outcome metrics (e.g., falls, pressure ulcers, readmissions), and present evidence-based improvement plans to senior leadership.
- Coordinate and support complex discharge planning and community care arrangements, liaising with social care, community nurses and primary care to ensure seamless transitions and reduce readmissions.
- Maintain regulatory compliance with national and local standards (for example CQC, NHS England, JCI or state licensing bodies), preparing for inspections and responding to recommendations or enforcement actions.
- Manage unit-level budgets, supply ordering processes and cost-effective resource utilization while escalating significant financial concerns to departmental finance leads.
- Lead training, competency assessments and mandatory education programs; act as a preceptor for new staff and support clinical development days and simulation training.
- Facilitate effective multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings and ward rounds, ensuring clear communication of care plans, escalation needs and family liaison responsibilities.
- Serve as incident manager for on-shift clinical incidents, coordinating immediate response, documentation and timely communication with families and governance teams.
- Champion person-centred care and patient experience initiatives, responding to complaints and feedback, and implementing service improvements based on patient-reported outcomes.
