Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Oversee and coordinate day-to-day nursing operations across assigned wards or specialty units, ensuring consistent, high-quality patient care and adherence to clinical standards and protocols.
  • Lead, mentor and supervise a multidisciplinary nursing team, including recruitment support, performance management, appraisals, coaching, and career development for staff at varying skill levels.
  • Manage staffing, rosters and resource allocation to maintain safe nurse-to-patient ratios, minimize agency dependency, and escalate staffing risks to senior management when required.
  • Provide advanced clinical assessment, triage and hands-on nursing care for complex patients; act as a clinical escalation point for nursing staff and junior clinicians.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all documentation in electronic health records (EHR), incident systems and handover notes, maintaining data integrity for audits and regulatory submissions.
  • Implement and monitor infection prevention and control policies, leading audits, action plans and staff training to reduce hospital-acquired infections and maintain compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Drive clinical governance initiatives including incident investigation, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions to improve patient safety and quality of care.
  • Lead and coordinate patient flow activities within and between units, proactively addressing bottlenecks, discharges, and transfers to optimize bed utilization and reduce escalation delays.
  • Develop, review and implement clinical protocols, care pathways and standard operating procedures in collaboration with allied health professionals and medical leads.
  • Oversee medication management practices, including controlled drug governance, reconciliation at admission/discharge, and monitoring adherence to prescribing and administration policies.
  • Conduct regular clinical audits, evaluate outcome metrics (e.g., falls, pressure ulcers, readmissions), and present evidence-based improvement plans to senior leadership.
  • Coordinate and support complex discharge planning and community care arrangements, liaising with social care, community nurses and primary care to ensure seamless transitions and reduce readmissions.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with national and local standards (for example CQC, NHS England, JCI or state licensing bodies), preparing for inspections and responding to recommendations or enforcement actions.
  • Manage unit-level budgets, supply ordering processes and cost-effective resource utilization while escalating significant financial concerns to departmental finance leads.
  • Lead training, competency assessments and mandatory education programs; act as a preceptor for new staff and support clinical development days and simulation training.
  • Facilitate effective multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings and ward rounds, ensuring clear communication of care plans, escalation needs and family liaison responsibilities.
  • Serve as incident manager for on-shift clinical incidents, coordinating immediate response, documentation and timely communication with families and governance teams.
  • Champion person-centred care and patient experience initiatives, responding to complaints and feedback, and implementing service improvements based on patient-reported outcomes.
  • Support specialty service development and change management projects, piloting new models of care, and embedding best practice across multiple units.
  • Supervise and audit compliance with safeguarding policies for adults and children, ensuring staff complete safeguarding referrals and follow-up actions promptly.
  • Monitor, report and help reduce clinical risks through proactive risk assessments, environmental safety checks and escalation of unresolved hazards.
  • Act as a clinical role model, demonstrating high standards of professional practice, ethical behaviour and resilience under pressure.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to workforce planning discussions, including temporary staffing strategy, skills-mix modelling and succession planning to improve long-term service sustainability.
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees (e.g., infection control, medicines safety, falls prevention) and represent the nursing group at operational or strategic meetings.
  • Support the implementation of digital health initiatives such as EHR upgrades, mobile documentation tools and telehealth workflows by piloting new processes and training staff.
  • Provide input to procurement decisions for clinical supplies and equipment, evaluating clinical usability, cost-effectiveness and training requirements.
  • Assist with data collection and performance reporting for key performance indicators (KPIs) such as length of stay, A&E wait times, and staffing metrics.
  • Coordinate volunteer programs, student placements and clinical placements with academic partners to support learning environments and future workforce pipelines.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Registered Nursing licensure (RN, RGN or equivalent) with current registration in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Advanced clinical assessment and decision-making skills for acute and complex patient presentations.
  • Medication management expertise, including IV therapy, controlled drugs governance and medication reconciliation.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, SystmOne) and digital documentation workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of infection prevention and control practices, aseptic technique and outbreak management.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Registered Nurse (RN / RGN / equivalent) with active registration and required local certifications.
