Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead scheduled and custom guided tours for individuals, families, and groups, delivering engaging on-site interpretation of historical, cultural, ecological, and geological features while tailoring commentary to diverse audiences and age groups.
  • Plan, prepare, and execute daily itineraries including route selection, timing, transport coordination, rest points, and contingency plans while communicating clear expectations to guests before and during the tour.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-tour briefings covering itinerary details, safety protocols, environmental stewardship, accessibility considerations, and guest expectations to ensure clarity and reduce risk.
  • Ensure guest safety at all times by assessing terrain and environmental conditions, making real-time risk assessments, enforcing safety equipment usage, and implementing evacuation or emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Administer first aid and emergency response as needed โ€” respond to incidents, stabilize guests, coordinate with emergency services, and complete incident reports according to company and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver high-quality interpretive talks and educational experiences using storytelling techniques, visual aids, props, and multimedia to increase guest engagement, knowledge retention, and visitor satisfaction.
  • Manage group dynamics and provide excellent customer service by handling diverse personalities, special needs requests, guest complaints, and unexpected changes with calm professionalism and problem-solving.
  • Maintain accurate guest manifests, waivers, permits, and required documentation before, during, and after excursions to comply with legal and organizational record-keeping standards.
  • Operate and maintain transportation vehicles and equipment safely and legally, including loading/unloading procedures, routine checks, minor troubleshooting, and coordinating maintenance with logistics teams.
  • Provide expert local knowledge on attractions, flora, fauna, history, culture, and environmental conservation, proactively answering guest questions and offering personalized recommendations for dining, lodging, and activities.
  • Sell or promote additional experiences, upgrades, local products, and partner services ethically and in accordance with company sales goals while preserving authenticity and guest trust.
  • Monitor environmental impact and model Leave No Trace or equivalent practices, informing guests about conservation priorities and enforcing site-specific regulations to protect natural and cultural resources.
  • Coordinate with operations, dispatch, and front-desk teams to manage scheduling, guest check-ins, transport logistics, and turnaround times for multi-group or multi-shift operations.
  • Prepare, clean, and secure equipment, interpretive materials, first-aid supplies, and permits before and after trips; maintain inventory logs and report consumables and repair needs to supervisors promptly.
  • Assist with route scouting, site research, and seasonal product development by identifying new interpretive opportunities, optimizing itineraries for accessibility, and incorporating guest feedback into program improvements.
  • Facilitate accessible experiences by accommodating mobility restrictions, sensory needs, language preferences, and other access requirements; coordinate adaptive equipment or specialized resources as necessary.
  • Execute merchandising and front-line ticketing tasks when required, including processing payments, issuing tickets, upselling programs, and documenting guest preferences for future personalization.
  • Support marketing efforts by contributing accurate tour descriptions, writing interpretive content, capturing and sharing approved photos or quotes, and participating in promotional events to drive bookings.
  • Mentor and brief seasonal guides, apprentices, and volunteers on interpretive technique, safety standards, conflict de-escalation, and customer service best practices to raise overall quality and consistency.
  • Maintain awareness of and comply with all local, state, and federal regulations relevant to guiding activities including permits, protected species guidelines, transportation regulations, and public health protocols.
  • Collect, analyze, and report guest feedback and KPI metrics (NPS, satisfaction scores, incident rates) to supervisors, recommending actionable changes to improve products, interpretive content, and operational efficiency.
  • Adapt to changing weather, environmental, and regulatory conditions by proactively adjusting routes, timing, and content to preserve guest safety and experience quality while communicating transparently with guests.
  • Participate in pre-season and ongoing training sessions on first aid, rescue techniques, interpretive methods, cultural sensitivity, and product knowledge to maintain and upgrade certification and performance standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Wilderness First Aid / First Aid & CPR certification and hands-on emergency response experience.
  • Navigation and route-planning proficiency (map, compass, GPS, and digital mapping apps) with proven ability to interpret topography and adjust routes.
  • Strong knowledge of local flora, fauna, geology, culture, and history relevant to the guided area; capable of preparing accurate interpretive content.
  • Proven experience operating and maintaining small passenger vehicles, vans, boats, rafts, or other transport used by the organization; valid driverโ€™s license and clean driving record.
  • Experience with guest reservation, POS, and CRM systems (e.g., FareHarbor, Rezdy, Rezgo, Xola) to manage bookings, payments, and guest data.
  • Competence with basic equipment maintenance, safety gear inspection, and inventory management (e.g., PPE, radios, flotation devices, technical gear).
  • Strong incident reporting and regulatory compliance skills with experience filing safety reports, permits, and documentation with authorities.
  • Multilingual communication skills or demonstrated proficiency in a second language commonly used by guests (Spanish, French, Mandarin, German, etc.) preferred.
  • Audio presentation and public speaking skills with experience using portable sound systems, microphones, and storytelling frameworks for groups of varying sizes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; demonstrated experience in guiding or frontline hospitality roles.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management, Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Science, History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or Education.
