Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior luthiers in the selection, preparation, and milling of raw tonewoods for acoustic and electric guitar bodies, necks, and tops, ensuring grain orientation and material quality meet build specifications.
  • Precisely operate and maintain a variety of woodworking machinery, including table saws, band saws, jointers, planers, and drum sanders, while strictly adhering to established safety protocols.
  • Perform detailed hand-shaping and carving of guitar necks to specific profiles (e.g., C, V, U shapes) using hand tools like spokeshaves, rasps, and sandpaper to achieve ergonomic and aesthetic goals.
  • Execute intricate fretwork, which includes pressing or hammering frets into the fretboard, leveling, crowning, dressing the fret ends, and polishing to ensure buzz-free playability and perfect intonation.
  • Meticulously prepare guitar bodies and necks for finishing by performing multi-stage sanding through progressively finer grits to create a flawlessly smooth, pore-filled surface ready for sealing and color.
  • Support the finishing department by applying stains, sealers, and topcoats (lacquer, polyurethane, etc.) using HVLP spray systems or traditional hand-rubbing techniques.
  • Conduct wet sanding and multi-stage buffing on cured finishes to remove any "orange peel" texture and achieve a professional, high-gloss or satin sheen free of imperfections.
  • Install and solder electronic components, including pickups, potentiometers, switches, capacitors, and output jacks, following complex wiring diagrams with clean and reliable solder joints.
  • Carefully assemble and fit all hardware components, such as tuning machines, bridges, nuts, strap buttons, and pickguards, ensuring precise alignment and function without damaging the instrument's finish.
  • Perform comprehensive final setups on completed instruments, adjusting neck relief via the truss rod, setting string height (action) at the nut and saddle, and fine-tuning intonation for optimal performance.
  • Aid in the delicate process of bending wooden sides for acoustic guitars and installing decorative binding and purfling, requiring a steady hand and attention to minute details.
  • Operate and monitor CNC routing machines for the accurate cutting of body shapes, neck pockets, and pickup cavities, including loading programs and performing quality checks on milled parts.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain an impeccably clean, organized, and safe workshop environment through daily cleanup of workbenches, machinery, dust collection systems, and shared spaces.
  • Manage and organize the inventory of raw materials, tonewoods, hardware parts, and finishing supplies, alerting the shop manager to low stock levels to prevent production delays.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration on hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery to ensure they are in optimal working condition and safe to operate.
  • Carefully package finished guitars for shipping, ensuring each instrument is securely protected within its case and shipping box to prevent damage during transit.
  • Document key build process details, material specifications, and quality control checks for individual instruments, contributing to the shop's digital and physical records.
  • Collaborate with the team to troubleshoot build challenges and identify opportunities for process improvements that enhance quality, efficiency, or workshop safety.
  • Provide support for ad-hoc repair and restoration projects on customer instruments as needed, under the guidance of senior luthiers.
  • Participate in the fabrication of custom jigs, templates, and fixtures designed to improve the accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency of various building tasks.
